I'm not a doctor, but I do consider myself borderline diabetic. The lady might want to talk with her doctor about these things.
She'll want to avoid fatty meats and processed sugars. By processed sugars, I mean like what is used in a lot of breakfast cereals. She'll also want to avoid fried foods because that will just put fat into them.
Try to get fresh and organic foods if you can. Don't drink sodas: Those tend to be very sugary. Consider teas and fruit drinks instead. Try to get a lot of whole grains and fish, if she's not allergic to iodine.
Over all else, she should talk with the doctor who's helping with her diabetes.

no bread, no rice, no cereal, no milk or anything made from milk (cheese). no egg yolk, no chicken skin, no fat, start to work out at least 30 minutes of fast walking everyday. Eat Oatmeal every day. I like the Irish style still cut. put a bowl in a crock that has some water in it and select low heat. leave it over night and in the am you have a really good oatmeal. add crushed walnuts, cinnamon and any kind of berries that you like to help with the taste. DO NOT USE MILK (bad cholesterol). no red meat. lots of fish. It is gonna be hard for the first few weeks but once you get used to it, it feels very good. I lost 19 pounds since jan 1st. my sugar, bp and chol all are back to normal. no alcohol no cigarettes. carbs are bad unless it is from oatmeal. proteins are good unless it is from egg yolk. no bacon or sausages. use turkey bacons. they are great. no butter. chol comes from animal products. carbs come from wheat, bread, pasta etc. best of luck.

if she's on high blood pressure meds avoid grapefruit of any kind it weakens the effect of the meds for high cholesterol red meats starches fried or fatty foods blood sugar sweets and starches mainly

At her age she needs to go on a diet and exercise regimen as direced by her physician. At advanced ages one cannot play around with ideas. All in all she should already be following a dietry recommendation based on the Americah Heart Association recommendations. Avoid cigarettes, alcohol, sodium, candy, trans-fats, and animal fat. Stick to fish and green/red/yellow vegetables. Also walk (if practical) or do very mild cardio several times a day.

avoid foods high in saturated fat, trans fats, sodium, refined carbohydrates. eat non-starchy vegetables, small portions of fruit, fish, whole grain breads and pastas in reasonable amounts. avoid biscuits, bacon, sausage, convenience foods, canned soups. might be a good idea to see a nutritionist for advice.

healthy diet including fibre and fish(omega3)...limit white bread/rice/pasta, sugary and fatty foods and exercise! walking and staying active helps.
