one time I went to a party where the host left puzzles out on every coffee table, it got people talking and working together - it's called an icebreaker, I think

do as much ahead of time as possible so you can be relaxed. Accept any help offered. People wouldn't offer if they didn't want to help. As the time gets closer and something didn't get done - let it go, don't worry about it.

Put out a platter of silly kid toys, playdough, spinning tops, those little half circle things then you turn inside out and they pop up can actually get people laughing out loud.

A good host/hostess is relaxed, happy and welcoming of the surprises and whatever outcome that evening might present. That's what the guests will pick up on and it helps put them at ease, especially if you've got folks who are just meeting each other for the first time.

Have fun.

This will sound ridiculous to you but I always try to have things for the guests to do. Most people will spend all of their time talking but it's nice if there is a simple activity that guests can participate at will in. I'm not talking about large group activities. Ideas: I set out an old photo album that can be looked at in one area, A birthday(Christmas, good luck etc.) wish tree where guests can write wishes and read wishes at, a few board games etc. This gives people who don't know many people something to do and some reason to intermingle it also gives people an excuse to leave if they are in a conversation they wish to leave!

It sounds kind of silly I know but people say my parties are always great even though I usually invite lots of different people and occasionally people who really don't get along!

Just remember that more is better. It's better to have too much food then not enough.
Music selection is important but in the end the people make a good party.
