What does it mean to have "Elevated Liver?"?

elevated liver enzymes can simply mean infection and repeat measurement over time will determine if you need to be concerned

A lot of things can make your Liver enzymes elevated. The Liver's job is to detoxify. A lot of medications may cause elevated liver enzymes because the liver is working very hard to metabolize the drug. A little elevation may be OK - but too high can indicate a problem - that is why on TV commercials you hear them say that people may need tests to make sure their liver is OK. A very common over the counter medication is notorious for causing elevated liver enzymes. TYLENOL - also known as ACETAMINOPHEN. Too much Tylenol can be very very bad for your Liver - so never take more that you are supposed to.
Alcohol can also cause elevated liver enzymes. This does not necessarily mean that you have cirrhosis or liver damage - but that you are making that liver work over time. If you have been told that you have elevated liver enzymes - you should discuss what this means for you. A slight elevation? Dangerously high? Time to change medications or dosages? Maybe even due to an infection like Hepatitis or Mono. Talk to your doc.
