Most people on here so far is wrong! The answer is you can't. Plain and simple. Take the fact that 25% of the population is infected and combine it with the facts that most of them don't know they are infected, the virus can spread even when there isn't an active outbreak and condoms do not provide 100% protection(they certainly make the risks lower though, and they protect against other STD's) than you simply can't prevent it. To abstain is the only way to prevent it 100%. Talk to your Doc, they will know more, this site is not a substitute for a medical professional!

You really can't prevent it since It can be passed by skin-to skin contact regardless of which part of the skin is touching. You can Get herpes from someone if they have a sore on the bottom of their stomach and it rubs against you. Condoms will only help if the breakout is in the area that's affected.
