It's gotta be a Mascarade Party! Decorate a table to look like a float to place the birthday cake on. Make a different one for the gifts. Try to find tiny Christmas lights in the colors of Mardi Gras to hang for atmosphere (Hoby Loby?) Rent a drink fountain. At one point have all the guests line up "train dance style" (I can't think of what to call it) and dance through the party. Prize for best dressed costume. Serve "U-Peel 'Em" shrimp (Boiled).....or...

If you are going all out and want a real Cajun recipe good for groups try the "Dump".
Boil Shrimp (heads on), Crawfish (heads on), Crab legs or Stone Crab Claws (my favorite), whole red potatoes, halved corn on the cob, and link sausage (cut in big pieces).

Use Zatarain's Crawfish, Shrimp & Crab Boil in bag. Read the box.

One bag of crab boil is sufficient for 4 pounds of shrimp, 4 pounds of crawfish or 1 dozen crabs.
To a large pot add 3 quarts of water, 4 tbs. salt, 1 bag crab boil, and one lemon quartered.
Add cayenne pepper to taste, if desired. bring water mix to rolling boil. Adding 2 tbs. of vinegar to the water makes crabs easier to pick. Boil crabs vigorously for 20 minutes, crawfish15 minutes, and shrimp 2 minutes. Allow seafood to remain in water 5 minutes after boiling. Drain.
DUMP on newspaper (you can use butcher paper if you'd like-no plates involved in this meal. You just eat out of the pile) lined tables, eat, roll up news papers and throw into trash cans. They'll want to wash their hands as you eat all this with your fingers. So easy! and GOOD! Have hot sauce on the tables. Place wooden hammers on tables to crack the crab legs. Also have fresh quartered lemons and a container of flavored Cajun salt on table and a roll of paper towels, beer.

You can make "red beans & rice- corn bread" if you want but, that's not necessary. Eat the dump, keep the mess down, and get to the dancing! have fun!

You definitely need the creole food...LA has some great food in New Orleans...you'll also need plenty of beads and open minded people to maybe show some boobs...get the birthday person a gold coconut....at Mardi Gras that is one of the best things you can get from the floats.

Make sure you have a lot of bead necklaces, masks, get a cd with Jazz type music and you can always have Cajun themed food to go with the whole New Orleans thing

Well, like everyone else has said... bead are important! Snazzy jazz music would be great! And traditional cajun style food... crawfish, po'boys, beignets and chicory coffee! And don't forget the Hurricanes! (Drinks that is!) A Pat O'Briens New Orleans staple!!
