Ideally I would like to have the party on the west coast and it will be for about 80 guests. I've never organized a large party before and would like advice as to where to have it, what to do, what types of food, drinks, entertainment to arrange and all that good stuff.

I'm looking for more of a "rent out half of a nightclub" sort of thing.

The spaceneedle in Seattle, they have great banquet facilities and you get to have your party at a national landmark.

Truthfully, with that large of a budget and having no experience at party planning, the best thing you can do is to set aside a percentage of that to hire someone to take care of all the details. Be sure to get references on the person in advance. This will ensure you get your money's worth on the party and will be able to actually enjoy it with your friends rather than fretting over everything that goes wrong at the last minute ... because things always do. Let a professional handle it.

I'd say go to Wine country in California. Rent a place near the beach and do an extravagant wine and cheese type party. Along with that you culd have a beach fire at night and probably rent a boat to see the night sky on the ocean. Just a few thoughts.

The best thing to do is figure out how much you want to spend for food, drinks, etc. When getting your caterer, DJ, etc., make sure you get referrals. I plan events for a company and some of the best recommendations you can get is from your caterer. You will also want to make sure that you take care of little details too (if it's outside you may have to rent a dance floor, you might have to rent tables and chairs, caterers usually supply linens.) If you can hire an event planner, the do it... they usually cost $$$ though. The Internet will be a good resource for you.

beach party. rent some beach houses for everyone to sleep.
have a big bbq on the beach, hire a band. have it south so it's warm. hire some dancers, hula or bellydancers (not strippers)
can your guests afford to fly there and rent cars? think about the needs of your guests.

Hire a party planner, they will take care of everything for you and it will probably be better than if you did it yourself
