My mother has been on the pump for almost 10 years now, and it has helped her greatly. SHe was a brittle diabetic before, but now her sugar levels have gone down and it is easier for her to manage the disease. We had non-medicaid insurance, so I am not sure about that, but maybe its only in the beginning to make sure you qualify? I think you will be happy with the pump if you get it.

Ive been on the pump for almost 6 months. My life is incredibly easier. The pump everything they say it is. When I first started on the pump I test my sugar at least 8 times a day (Wake, before and after meals, before bed) Now I test 6 times a day. The pump has setting that much be calibrated for best results. Basal insuling given in small amounts throughout the day and your normal boluses. The more finger stick results you have the quicker and easier it is to get you under control. Im not sure about medicare's requirements but your doctor requiring more frequent test may help your approval of the device if your diabetes is shown to have to be more seriously uncontrolled.

My doctor says 8 times should be a minimum for pumpers. If you want a pump, you should continue testing that often even after on it.

Umm... I'm a very bad pump user, and I only test my blood sugar two to four times a day. But, you really should do it more like six or eight. I'm just bad.

theres no exact recomendation as to the number of times you will monitor your blood sugar. if you are using regular insulin you can monitor your sugar every 6 hrs and if you are using isophane insuline you can monitor every 12 hrs. however if your sugar is controlled you can decrease the frequency. if you hace complications like DKA or HONK then you have to do it hourly.

Have you ever tried pricking on your arms and calfs? that really helps. It doesn't hurt. arms and legs are not as sensitive as the fingers. Try it.
