Being an ultrasonographer ( a person who performs ultrasound tests), this is a pretty broad question.
Ultrasound is sound higher than what someone can hear (>20,000 Hz).
When it interacts with certain mediums, it causes tissue to oscillate and its density will reproduce an image. Actually, it is determined by the amount of time it takes to leave the probe, enter the skin and return back to the probe. These oscillations caused by super-high frequency ultrasound and tissue density reproduce an image... whether it be a liver, a baby or a blood vessel.

Ultrasound uses ultrasonic waves for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, specifically to image an internal body structure, monitor a developing fetus, or generate localized deep heat to the tissues. An echocardiogram can show the size, shape, and movement of the heart's valves and chambers, as well as the flow of blood through the heart.
