hey, forget dinner, we never bothered with it, too much brunch !
OMG this brings back such memories
my stepmom would be in the kitchen with the radio on low listening to a spanish station and singing along. she would be mixing up a batch of home made tortillas. there would be lots of fresh perked coffee and fresh pan dulce. on the stove was an old fry pan with water in it. over the water on a wire screen would be barbacoa heating up, she just bought it and the pan dulce across town a few minutes ago.
i her molgehete would be fresh tomatoes, chile petines from the back yard, garlic, cilantro and a few tomillitos if we had any. GOD, could she ever make great salsa!
we would start with the coffee, some mexican brandy if you needed a wakeup, and a little pan dulce. man, was it hard to stop at one or two pieces, keeping in mind the main show was coming up.
once the barbacoa was heated, the salsa made, the tortillas would be finished over an open flame on the gas stove. last thing, if you wanted, was a couple fresh scrambled eggs. and fresh green onions on the side.
more coffee or a cold beer to go with the meal, fantastic.....
no need for lunch, you were good to go til after 5pm.
rest in peace alice, you had no idea how well you feed our bodies and our souls in that little pink house in gardendale so many years ago...

My favorite mom's food was in the Summer, when we had veggies from dad's garden...sliced tomatoes, black eye peas with okra, cornbread, sauteed squash...fried potatoes and onions if we were lucky and maybe some strawberry-rhubarb cobbler. Sometimes there was meat (usually pork, chicken fried steak on occasion), sometimes not. It wasn't a monetary/vegetarian thing, it was just that the garden food was plenty! My husband and I still make that meal today!

I am from the deep south (Louisiana to be exact) and my family was rather poor. But Sunday dinner was always good even though it didn't cost much. We had homemade fried chicken (usually one from the yard). Along with the fried chicken was usually a garden fresh veggie like snap beans or whatever was in season. And of course we always had to have mom's special potato salad, my grandmother's homemade biscuits and then for dessert ...homemade banana pudding! We felt like we were rich eating that spread!! HE HE

My favourite was Nana's Roast Pork sundays!
Roast Pork with 'always crispy crackling' and veges, over boiled peas, apple sauce, cheese sauce and gravy.
Then Pavlova for dessert with fresh cream and fruit.
If we didnt go to Nana's house, Dad would cook on Sundays, and always the same. Sausages, home made chunky fries and eggs.
I hated eggs though, and sausages werent exactly my favourite meat... so not my favourite, but it seemed to do well for everyone else in the family.

My memory of Sunday dinner was always, always the wonderful chicken baked with lemon and oregano and garlic. The main dish was a Syrian rice, chicken and pasta dish. Oh, how I remember that and often think of it on Sundays!! Thanks for the memories!!!!

When we'd go to my grandma's, we'd always arrive late at night. She would have red and green chile, eggs, bacon, homemade tortillas, and fried potatoes. OMG! For dessert, we'd have sharp cheddar cheese and syrup (caro or maple) on top. I miss my grandma.
