Was it a fasting blood test? That will make a difference in the results. According to Lab Corp of America the range for potassium is 3.5 - 5.3. I had a level of 6.2 after fasting 12 hours and had to go in immediately because the level was lethal. The Dr. suspected a botched blood draw so another fasting level was taken and it was in the high normal range. (5.2) I had to check my vitamins to make sure they did not contain potassium, I could eat no potatoes, bananas, O.J., cantaloupe, peaches, peas, spinach, chocolate(!)...I got a list I had to follow for a month and was re-tested and was still a 5.2. So they have determined that I just have a high level naturally. Don't know why. I stay on the diet and feel fine. Kidney function is normal, blood pressure is normal. Sodium is a little high. Blood sugar definitely should be fasting. Don't worry at all if the test was not fasting. I have 3 diabetics in my family and I am tested all the time and I have to fast each time. (I am not diabetic) Since they are not having you come in immediately like they did me I would not be too concerned. Keep your appointment, do what they say and you will be fine. God Bless!

High blood sugar may suggest diabetes. The kidneys regulate the potassium, in the blood . In diabetes sometimes the capacity of the kidneys to do their job is diminished. Certain prescription drugs also can interfere .If in fact the kidneys are the cause, dietary restriction of high potassium foods is needed. In extreme cases medications are prescribed such as sodium polystyrene sulfate. In any case tests are needed to confirm a cause and only a Doctor is qualified to diagnose the problem. This is a matter to discuss whith your Doctor.

Referred to as hyperkalemia, high potassium is caused by many things.
If you have poor kidney function then an increased intake dietary or supplementary of potassium will remain in the blood and give a higher reading. Lowering the intake of it or being given another medication to lower this may correct it.
Signs and symptoms are that of irregular heart beat and nausea, otherwise, it is often asymptomatic. Prolonged high potassium levels are dangerous and in need of urgent medical attention. I would go see the doctor sooner than later!!!

Addison's disease is a rare disorder characterised by high potassium levels and low sodium levels, among other symtoms such as low blood pressure. Many doctors are unfamiliar with it.
My father had it for many years and was hospitalised many times before finally being diagnosed.
It is caused by non-functioning adrenal glands which are located on top of the kidneys. The adrenal glands produce cortisone for the body .
It is often accompanied by diabetes.

Bring it up to your doctor because chances are he or she will not test you for it otherwise.

Also, you may want to talk to an endocrinolgist . They are specialists in disorders such as diabetes and addison's.

Potassium salts are the main point of sport drinks. We need potassium to live and it is the first radio active food we use. Salt substitutes are mainly potassium salts and some water softeners run on potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride.
