You should have it at a favorite restaurant or bar. That's always a hit. Dinner and dancing are popular among all ages. Many restaurants have banquet rooms you can rent. Your party might be too large though. You may have to rent a hall, perhaps at a nice hotel where guests can get a room if they've had too much to drink. A catering hall can be fine if you have the right food and entertainment. Maybe a local band or a great DJ could spice things up. If you're into it, get a Karaoke DJ. A lot of people are into that. If you're on a tighter budget, rent a local firehouse hall, or a Son's of Italy hall or something like that and bring in an outside caterer. I wouldn't bank on anything outside in November, in NJ, might be too cold.

Okay, how about this? Do a digital camera scavenger hunt.
You send your friends with their cameras out to search for certain things. The photos are the proof that they found them. If you all meet at the same place to pass out the clues and get the games started, then guests can ride together in groups, making it more fun. That way, the 80 year olds can be paired with a younger couple and won't have to drive themselves. You can have the pairings set up beforehand, and mix the people you think would work best together.
They read the clues in the car and everytone thinks of places they can go to get the desired photos. Then they drive there, snap the photo, and move on to the next one. You can make the clues difficult to solve, or simple, but adding some challenge makes it more fun. They'll be looking all over town for specific items.
Give it a time limit and meet back for snacks and birthday cake. There you'll determine who got the most clues, and who did it the quickest. Maybe have a few inexpensive prizes, for the fastest, the most, and the fewest, for instance.
I got this idea from my latest HP printer cartridge package, and think I'll try it myself for my next get-together. I'll include the link it has on the package so you can check out their ideas and also print invitations, certificates and hunt lists.
Whatever you do, have fun!

My husband turned 40 last April. I also looked at all the 40 theme parties and didn't like what I saw. My husband is definitely not over the hill!! So, I went the opposite direction and had a "Still a Kid at Heart" theme party. I decorated his cake with my kids trucks and Wee People characters from the play room. I put white paper on all the tables with lots of crayons. I rented fun games to play such as ring toss and bean bag toss. I got cheap prizes in bulk from www.orientaltrading.com. For gift bags, I filled up colorful pails with crayons, coloring books, candy, bubbles, etc. There were also a couple of tables with boxes of games. The party had an assortment of age ranges from babies to about 70 years old. Everyone had a great time because they could act silly and have fun like a kid. There would be lots of ways to do this theme, and I personally think everyone should CELEBRATE becoming 40 rather than make it a black doomsday birthday. Have fun!

I recently attended a scavenger hunt. I don't know if that would be something feasible with 80 yr olds, but if you partnered them with someone younger it may be. Also you could have a costume party. This is always fun and could be relatively inexpensive. It lets everyone bring out their own personalities. Costume parties haven't been as popular lately, so it may be a really good change. Or you could set up a wine bar with some twists. There are lots of good, relatively cheap wines. It just depends on your tastes. Good luck and have a great time!

Make it a 60's party -- take some time to do some real research -- have the correct music and the food that was "in" during the year they were born. You can also request the guests dress in time appropriate clothing. I think even the 80 yr olds could get into this. Decorations should fit the time also.

See if you can find a large boat that is covered from the weather rent it and supply a bar with a bartender either a DJ or a band for dancing and make sure that you ask the captain of the boat if he can supply food for your guest or if you need to make other arrangements. By going out on a boat it will be a private party with no interruptions or noisy neighbors. It would also be perfect for video and pictures to remember your birthday with nice scenery. Hope you have a nice Birthday.

It might be neat to do a costume party where everyone dresses up (minus the 40 year old) like they're from the 1940s ... this would be nostalgic for the 80 year olds and fun for the younger crowd. You could put on swing music and hire maybe a local band to play 40s-era music. I think everyone would enjoy a fun costume party that really makes the 40 year old realize his/her age. :)

Rent out a contemporary art gallery for the night, and do it in style. Excellent champagne, killer martinis, a raw bar, a jazz combo, maybe even a cigar bar if there is an outdoor patio. You could do a Gatsby theme to make it even more fun, and invite people to come in costume. Or just make it black tie. 40 is special... life begins at 40. Celebrate it joyfully.

Relate the party to the year your partner was born. 60's it is...diner food? I am not a 60's girl so i do not have too much insight -- but with a little research you should be able to figure it out. Find out what candy bars were a hit then. What drinks were big - ice cream soda?
alternatively --- I love wine and cheese parties.
