I keep calling Vegan / Vegetarian sushi, sushi (but techically sushi means raw fish doesn't it?)
By BF sometime calls them California Rolls but I think it’s not always appropriate due to most California Rolls aren’t wrapped the same way as sushi is, so I think there’s more of a difference then just the fact that California Rolls usually don’t have fish in them.
I could be tottally wrong, just help me out here ppl!
Thanks :)

This is why I think we should report him, this is the only reason I finally decided to report him my self)

sushi means raw fish with rice balls, sashimi is just the raw fish. The rolls can have anything in them, if they don't have seafood then they are vegetarian...some versions of California rolls are veggie.
Most people use the term "sushi" as a generic for anything with raw fish.

Actually it's sushi. Sushi refers to the style of Japanese food presentation involving rice dressed with rice wine vinegar and sake. The rice is the sushi part of the dish. You can have sushi with anything, it doesn't have to be fish.

A California Roll is a perfect example. A California Roll is sushi, even though it doesn't have raw fish. It was developed for Americans. They put the rice on the outside so that Americans wouldn't be freaked out by the texture of the toppings, which became fillings.

Makizushi is rolled sushi. Nigirizushi is the sushi with different ingredients, often raw fish, served on topped of little mounds of rice.

Tamago is a specially cooked slice of omelet on sushi rice.

Kappamaki is a cucumber roll.

Umekyu is cucumber rolled with neri ume, a tart plum paste.

Inarizushi is sushi rice wrapped in fried tofu.

Chakinzushi and Fukusazushi are different presentations of sushi rice wrapped in egg crepe.

The raw fish without rice is sashimi.

I know a lot about sushi from living in both Japan and San Francisco (best Asian food in the U.S.). Sushi is a reference to the style of the rice, not to the fish, which is called sashimi, if it is not served with rice. Nigiri sushi is the pressed rice with the meat on top. It does not have to be fish. It can be cooked eel, or even raw beef. What you are talking about, i.e., the "rolls," were invented for Americans. As long as it involves sushi rice, though, it is ok to call it sushi. What it actually is, though, is Japanese McNuggets. Try asking for temaki or just "maki" the next time you are in a sushi place.

Well, you would call them by what they are, such as a "cucumber roll".

"Sushi" actually refers to the rice, not the fish. Do you care?

California Rolls generally have crab or "fake crab" (pollock) in them.

Sashimi is raw fish without the rice. That is the opposite of what you are refering to, though. I don't remember if there is a term for "fishless" sushi. Personally, that is like going to a steak house and ordering a salad. What is the point of that?

Sushi is cold cooked rice dressed with vinegar that is shaped into bite-sized pieces and topped with raw or cooked fish, or formed into a roll with fish, egg, or vegetables and wrapped in seaweed.

So it doesn't necessarily mean raw fish (unagi and anago are cooked). Sushi has become sort of a generic term which could include California rolls.

♡Perhaps you mean 'Inari zushi'? It's just seasoned rice in a tofu pouch. Looks like this:

It's quite delicious and can be very simple or mixed with other delicious bits of veggies.
☆ NO, technically 'sushi' does not mean raw fish. Raw fish is called 'sashimi' here in Japan. Sushi refers more to the vinegared rice not to the toppings used. There are many varieties of sushi with no fish or cooked fish if you don't like the raw fish type.
Try tamago sushi. Egg omelet type, it's delicious:

You can try sushi filled with tenpura, batter fried shrimp:

California rolls are very good which contain (cooked)imitation crab meat, avocado, shredded carrot and cucumber:

There are many more to choose from! I love sushi (sashimi too!) and eat it often. Try the ones that look good to you until you find your favorites. They're healthy and delicious. Just calling it 'Veggie Sushi' is fine! Hope this helps!♡

Just call them sushi without fish! (Or 'sushi without RAW fish' if that's what you want!)

Sashimi is raw fish, sushi is the rice. There are LOTS of sushi without raw fish, and even in Japan there are some sushi without fish at all! But if you're in America you should have no trouble finding non-fish sushi!

I think calling it vegetarian sushi is acceptable. Nigiri sushi always has fish in it (it's raw seafood on top of rice). California rolls don't have raw fish in it. It consists of avocado and artificial crab. Maki rolls (usually have hip names such as philadelphia rolls, spider rolls, etc), maki has a mixture of raw fish and cooked seafood.

Actually, sushi is describing the rice cake. Some variations happen to have fish.
