Some medications can cause a low platelet count. A low platelet count may not be a problem unless it becomes too low. A lot of petecchiae (little pink dots) on your skin, bruising, and excessive bleeding are signs that you should see your doctor right away. Your doctor may want to try you on different medications. A severely low platelet count may require transfusions of platelets.

Thrombocytopenic purpura is a recognized disease related to destruction of platelets by the spleen. This may be a primary disease or secondary to splenic enlargement due to liver disease. Splenectomy usually cures it.
There is also a usually fatal disease called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in which platelets are low due to clotting of them in vessels and petechial hemorrages occur over the body.

There are some medicines that cause that like Cloramphenicol.
There are some diseases that can cause it like leukemia.
Some cases may be acute and others chronic.
The fancy name for this is thromocytopenia. One other disease is Chronic Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Puerpuera. Nobody knows the cause and it is chronic.
