what does it mean when an MRI of the thoracic spine has a report that says "diffuse increase in lung markings accentuated by respiratory artifact"

hmm... artifact? sounds like a foreign body artifact -- usually when there is an artifact in the lungs, the lungs produce more secretions in order to expel it out. that's why there is an increase in lung markings (all over the lungs = diffuse).

depends on where it is located, for that -- i think a bronchoscopy is indicated.

i have once seen an artifact in an x-ray -- a really solid artifact, very opaque and we were trying to figure out what it was -- turns out it was a cavity filling that was "lavaged" into the lungs while the patient was being rescucitated. (ouch)

diffuse = all over
increase = more
lung markings = what they see in the lungs
accentuated by respiratory artifact = made greater because of breathing motion

It looks like there is stuff all through the lungs, but it's probably just "static" from breathing motion.

Those radiologists!

Better be careful with it. In 2004, I was in a situation where I could not kick a cough. The physician I was seeing at that time, just kept prescribing me cough medicine with pain killer in it. Fortunately one day, I went in when he was out and I saw a different doctor. He was very upset with my doctor. He showed me my x-ray. It was awful, my lungs were covered with swollen lymph nodes so he sent me to a lung doctor. So now, I am disabled and cannot work.
I am not saying this will happen to you but please be persistent, because it is your lungs & not the doctors. I will keep you in my prayers.
