The first time, or primary breakout is EXTREMELY painful! I was in so much pain I started crying during the physical exam and my doctor gave me a prescription for painkillers to help with the pain. I developed maybe like 10 blisters in my genital area. They were very large and red. Sometimes they would open up and puss a clearish fluid. It was really nasty! I even had to call off of work, because it hurt so bad to walk or even sit down! With medication they cleared up in about 2 and a half weeks.

My reoccurring outbreaks aren't nearly as bad as my first one was! About half of the people who have recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes feel an outbreak coming a few hours to a couple of days before it happens. They may feel tingling, burning, itching, numbness, tenderness, or pain where the blisters are going to appear. This is called the prodrome. I can feel when I am going to have an outbreak. I start taking my medication immediately and the sores seem to disappear within a few days to a week.

People with herpes can either take medicine every day or just when they "feel" an outbreak coming on. I get really sick on the medicine so I only take it when I feel one coming on (plus it is cheaper!) Also, the longer you have genital herpes the less outbreaks you get. I have had herpes for 5 years now, and my last outbreak was over a year and a half ago! :)

Genital herpes is an infection of the genitals, buttocks, or anal area caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV.

You get a sore. It's red with white blisters on it. You get them on your mouth or on your vagina or penis. I take Valtrex. It keeps it from coming back.
