Well first of all, take a look at what you're eating and eliminate foods that are not necessary - refined sugars, white flours...
Ok, so I'm biased, but vegetarians DO tend to be thinner than meat eaters, so I'd recommend eliminating meat as well, but if you don't want to, that's fine.
Your diet alone won't be good enough. You'll want to exercise as well. Slow exercise such as walking will burn calories, but aerobic exercise (running or anything that gets your heart pumping) will be better for your heart.
Talk to a nutritionist or our doctor.
Also, check that you are actually being sensible. Work out your BMI to see whether you have a healthy weight. In general, people should be eating healither, so just opt for whole grain bread instead of white bread and cut back on the sweets and soft drinks. Eat lots of fruit, vegetables, and if you aren't eating meat eat three serves of beans and lentils etc every day to ensure that you have enough protein.
Another tactic is the no-diet diet. It's when you eat when you are hungry, but stop when you feel satisfied. Sounds simple, right? Of course, there's always the problem of nutrition but just remember to include lots of vegetables of different colours. Put your cutlery down between bites to give yourself time to chew and digest properly - you'll find that you'll feel full sooner and not as bloated after wards. Drink a glass of water when you feel a craving at a stupid time (midnight, for example) to avoid binges. This will stop hunger pangs or anything that you don't want to get in a diet.
Good luck :)

It's always a good idea to have some sort of support, and make some small changes. If you're into natural type of health, then one book I liked was Eat Right For Your Blood Type. A dietitian is always a great idea, but they probably would be expensive. You can always see one once, and tell them you are on a budget, and ask for as much help in one session as possible. Another suggestion is to just enjoy what you like to eat, but eat less. Put your fork down on your plate between each bite. And drink 8 cups of water a day. It'll make you feel fuller and less hungry. Good luck!

I also had a hard time with diets. You can get online and compare various diets and tailor one for your taste and needs. The main thing that I learned is of course eating "healthier" foods, but the main thing is the quantity. Cut way back and it will definitely help. Good Luck!!!
