There really is no "safe" way to give or receive oral sex. The safest thing (other than abstinence obviously) is to wear a condom every time and even then that is not 100% safe.

A lot of STDs can be spread by skin to skin contact. Even though the condom is covering the penis, certain STDs including HPV and herpes, occur in the whole genital area not just the penis, and can be spread to someone who is giving oral sex to that person. You can get herpes on your lips and mouth area and you can also get warts in the back of your throat and in you mouth from HPV (this is pretty rare though).

And, if there is no condom used, then you greatly increase your chances of getting an STD. Chlamydia, crabs, gonorrhea, hepatitis, herpes, HIV, HPV, and syphilis can ALL be spread by oral sex. 30% of people with genital herpes got it from cold sores (herpes simplex virus 1). It is more rare to get STDs by oral sex though, compared to actual sexual intercourse and anal sex.

I hope this helped! Check out this site for more info:

Wow, the ignorance on here surprises me every day! The word "safe" is a relative term. Is oral sex more "safe" than unprotected anal sex? Yes! Is oral sex more "safe" than mutual masturbation? No! All in all, it constitutes a fairly low risk compared to other sexual acts. With that said though it is certainly possible to contract herpes, HIV and other STI's from oral sex. I suggest you consult a health care provider, or someone what works in a health centre who is both more informed and less ignorant than people on here. This site does not substitute for a medical expert. Consult a Doctor about all possible problems. Take care and make sure you wrap it up!

It's not 'unsafe' if you take the proper precautions, like using condoms and stuff.
