* Being a woman. Women are more likely than men to become infected with HSV and tend to have more severe and longer-lasting symptoms. Women also are at a greater risk of having complications from genital herpes infection.

What are the risk factors for getting genital herpes? Sexual contact is the risk factor. Also, it is recommended that towels and sheets are washed after every use during an outbreak. A condom does help, but it does not provide 100% protection. Also it is estimated that 25% of Americans are infected with genital herpes, many who are not aware of it. I got identified with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 7 yrs ago, while I was still in college and had a silly one-night stand. I realize lots of girls will say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before.
