I don't like the cost of meat, and don't mind not eating it. Can I maintain muscle by eating other proteins like whey and bean?

It's a misconception that beans give you gas. The beans with chilli powder or more ingredients give you gas.

I've eaten beans a lot, and I have no problem with gas.

Sure and not many people would want to be around you if you eat beans only so you will have plenty of space to work out!

Most seem to think there is not problem with eating beans and no meat. I have a feeling they have not taken the time to examine what the body needs and why. Beans and peas are good protein sources and are very healthy for any of us. When young it is not a real problem not eating meat. After about thirty it begins to show up in the loss of lean muscle. It takes a lot of beans and peas to make up for this loss. Meat has the protein we all need to maintain good muscle tone. The older we get the more we need meat to replace the muscle loss. You when young do not need a lot of meat each day but as you get to the age of 60 and above meat is vital to good health. We are not vegetarians as an animal. We eat many things and our system needs this variety to stay healthy. Talk to your doctor and ask him or her about what we need for good health.

Grilled Chicken, buy Healthy Choices Steamers, they're amazing. Only about 300 calories in them and they're a meal, with about 18g of Protein. Protein is mainly in meat, so if you want it eat more chicken, or buy some protein supplements.

Although I cannot answer your question, I know that you will need recipes for soy products. See the link below, at the Ohio Soybean Council.

This is kind of humorous, but may be what you want:

"Research conducted at Ohio State University shows that both whey and soy can contribute to gains in muscle size [2]. In the study, a group of men received protein bars (3 bars per day, providing 33 grams of protein per day) containing soy or whey protein for nine weeks. All subjects followed the same strength-training program.

"Muscle growth was slightly greater in the men given whey, who gained approximately 2% lean body mass (about 1.3 pounds) compared to the soy group, who gained only 1.6% lean body mass (about 1 pound).

"Although the authors of this study conclude that “soy and whey protein bar products both promoted exercise training-induced lean body mass gain,” it’s important to note that one of the co-authors of this study invented the soy bars used in the research and also owns the company that sells them!

"The fact that a study involves someone with a vested interest in the outcome doesn't mean you should ignore it. However, we do need to treat these results with some caution, especially when you consider the recent studies that highlight adverse hormonal changes arising from soy intake."

The human body needs vast amounts of different proteins to stay strong and healthy.

Beans contain some types of proteins, there are other plants that contain more, but you can't get all the proteins you need without eating meat.

of course! i'm a vegetarian, and it's very healthy. u can still get enough (or more than enough) protein by eating beans, grains, and soy. just make sure that u do eat plenty of the above, and ur getting enough iron and vitamin B12 from a multivitamin or from a fortified food.
