For his birthday, I would like to make him a cake in the shape of a rolly polly. Any suggestions?

Use pans that you have, make the cake and freeze it. It will be easier to cut the shape of it. If you want it to be rolled up, just stack 2 round cakes, or flat out, one 9x13 and one or two round ones. It should be interesting. Be creative. Use licorice for legs, and food coloring for the frosting. Make your own or buy extras at the store. You never know how much you're going to need!

Here's some random thoughts:
If you have the time look for a mold of the bug itself. It's probably a long shot to find one and even if you do it would more than likely be expensive.
Maybe you could use a regular Bunt Cake mold and modify the cake after it's done.
If you use your frosting and trimmings right you could come up with a little face.
Think of what the Rolly Polly looks like when it rolls up into its ball position.
Legs? Chocolate covered carrot slivers?
It sounds like a decent culinary challenge, I hope you figure it out. Good luck and Happy Birthday to your 3-year old.

That's cute! I think even if you did a round cake you could make him look rolled up; I did like that guys idea of cutting a bunt cake too, that was good!
Good Luck! :)
