HONEST PEOPLE ONLY, PLEASE-Hi, i am moving to San Francisco Bay Area, and i wanted to open like a little store, it is not a restaurant or anything, its just going to be like a little family vegeterian restaurant, its going to be like a little store where people can come in, grab food, pay and go, or maybe just sit down outside. Do you think this restaurant will work in San Francisco?? Where else do you think it might be a good place to start this bussiness??. Please be honest.

While I don't live in San Francisco, I do travel there several times each year. It is a great city with so much potential for a business like you described. Choosing the right location will be your biggest challenge. I'd recommend staying near the Haight Ashbury area were there are several vegetarian spots that do quite successful. People tend to go there for a look at the Hippie capital of the world and would be eager for some good vegetarian food on the go. One thing that they are always missing is a shop that opens before 10 am. The other location, which would be quite expensive, is to be near Pier 39. That is the place that most tourists go for dining and sight seeing. I wish you the best of luck and hope that someday you post your name on the web and I can dine with you.

Do you have the money to pay for rent, utilities, supplies, and payroll for a year or more while the place gets on its feet? Restaurants seldom take off like a rocket, and it will be even harder for a small mom-and-pop operation.

A smarter move might be to work in a veg restaurant or cafe for a year just to get an idea as what you'd be getting into.

Restaurants are the most volitile business in SF. Hundreds open and close each year.

That being said, I think the Valencia corridor area would be a good place to look (Valencia between 16th and 24th) if you want a young, hip crowd in a high traffic area.

There's a severe lack of small vegetarian restaurants in the Richmond and Sunset areas of SF, called "the Avenues". Of course, part of that reason is it's not zoned for business in a lot of areas.

I would talk to Score, a group of retired businesspeople who give advice to small business owners. They could give you some advice.

If this sort of restaurant will make it anywhere, it is here in the Bay Area. Be cautioned, however, because vegan/vegetarian cuisine is very popular here and the competition will be fierce. Try to find a wealthy, but isolated community to try your cafe in. On the other hand, you have many great sources of fresh, organic produce available here.
