Ok....it is spelled Diabetes Insipidus....and although all the people who answered this question before me did have some things right.....well some people really didnt know what they were talking about (no offence!)

So firstly there are more than one type of diabetes insipidus(also known as DI by those who have it)

1) Neurogenic DI also known as central, hypothalamic, pituitary or neurohypophyseal is caused by a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin. This form of DI comes in two types -Idiopathic, which means no known cause and Familial, which means inherited. Also sometimes this is caused by brain tumors and/or removal of part or all of the pituitary gland.

2) Nephrogenic DI also known as vasopressin-resistant. It is caused by insensitivity of the kidneys to the effect of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin.

3) Dipsogenic DI is a form of primary polydipsia. It is caused by abnormal thirst and the excessive intake of water or other liquids.

4) Gestagenic DI also known as gestational. It is caused by a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin, that occurs only during pregnancy.

The most noticeable symptoms of all these forms of DI is
excessive urination (peeing a lot) and drinking large amounts to compensate for the loss of water through the urination, there are more symptoms but they differ depending on the type of DI.

If you want to know more about this illness there is a great america website called the Diabetes Insipidus Foundation (DIF) --www.diabetesinsipidus.org - which would be a good place to start

it's actually diabetes insipidus
Despite the similar names, diabetes insipidus is not related to

diabetes mellitus (which is sometimes called sugar diabetes). Some people with diabetes insipidus have kidneys that don't concentrate urine very well (meaning their urine is more diluted). They have to urinate very often. They might wake up 2 or 3 times in the night to urinate. People with diabetes insipidus are thirsty all the time. They often want to drink liquids every hour.

Two things cause diabetes insipidus. In some people, a part of the brain (called the hypothalamus) doesn't make enough antidiuretic hormone (called ADH), which your body needs to work right. In other people, the kidneys don't work with this hormone the way they should. Most people with diabetes insipidus get it after an injury to the head or after brain surgery. Some people with diabetes insipidus have a brain tumor. Sometimes it runs in families. Some medicines, like lithium, can also cause it. About 25% of the time, doctors can't find any reason for it.

My older brother developed this from a sever head injury, thats usually how people get it. It causes your body to flush out all the water in your body and if not treated you will dehydrate and die very quickly. My brother was the first case that many of his doctors had ever seen, it is not that common. He used a medicine we had to spray up his nose. We ended up controlling it by giving him crazy high amounts of sodium. We put salt in EVERYTHING he ate or drank, salt makes you retain water. Because he had to drink almost continuously we found other ways to get in fluids.... jello, popcicles, icecream, kool-aid. They all had to have salt added to them. Like most his went away, but not for about 2 years.

A disease where you pee a lot because you do not have or cannot react to a hoemone called Anti-diuretic Hormone. Your sugar is normal unless you have co-existing Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes insipidus is caused by the inability of the kidneys to conserve water, which leads to frequent urination and pronounced thirst.
