Lead paint (defined as more than 1.0 milligram lead per square centimeter of painted surface) hasn't been allowed in residential use since 1978. Generally, those levels weren't exceeded since the 60's. Pre-1950 was a lot "hotter". Other paints (marine, industrial, etc) weren't effected by that. But as the toxic effects and the legal liability came to be appreciated, paint for most all applications shifted to other coloring and wearing agents.

The lead in paint is not metallic lead like in a fishing weight. Lead salts are used - lead oxide, etc. Each one has a characteristic color (google "red lead", "white lead", etc) that could be mixed as desired. Also, the lead content made the paints very durable. So it tended to be used for high-use, or impact surfaces such as doors and window trim and in kitchens and baths. When I test houses, that where it always is. That "good" paint was more expensive, so it rarely was used on flat walls or ceilings past WWII.

Paints don't use lead ingredients any longer but did in the past. Lead is used in formulating pigments (dyes, colors). These pigments are inexpensive and long lasting. They have been replaced with safer alternatives.
