Why eat anything living for that matter? It has been shown that plants react to music and human feelings. Does that not make them "consciuous" in some sense?
Yes it does! My opinion is that humans should eat only rocks and sand, with a sidedish of water, if you really must. But then again, on the rocks and in the water, tiny bacteria live. You wouldn't want to upset them by introducing them to the gastric juices in your stomach, now would you?
In conclusion, extremists bother me, even if it's for culinary habits.

I was a vegetarian for seven years, I had my diet approved by nutritionists, and everything was great. I found out I have an inherited thyroid problem that was set off by the vegetarian diet, causing lots of troubles, and I am apparently anemic. A doctor (a few doctors, actually) told me that my choices were eating meat or being on a huge regimen of costly prescription drugs for the rest of my life. So now I eat meat. I got really sick at first, REALLY SICK, but now I do OK, I try to only eat meat that was raised in an open, hormone free environment in which the animals were allowed a peaceful life. I still eat more Morningstar buffalo wings ans facon then real meat, but I have to eat some meat, every day, and it sucks, but my health is my justification, although most people can live a successful and disease free vegetarian life, I am just not one of them.

I can only justify eating meat if you understand basic anatomy; Those two pointy teeth either side of your incisors are "canines", they have developed in meat eating animals as an aid to grasping and ripping raw prey. There are no vegetables that they are required for eating.
Your body also requires (for complete nutrition) a wide range of "basic dietary building blocks" that are unavailable from a vegan or vegetarian diet.
That doesn't make "factory-farming" of animals acceptable, however. I eat meat, but try to eat free-range or wild animals where practical.
While I politically & ethically support vegetatarianism (though I think veganism is just silly), from a practical standpoint it is not a healthy lifestyle, and most vegetarians would do the world more good if they put their efforts into promoting "kinder" farming techniques, and promoting other "less cruel" sources of protein (such as insects) as "acceptable" & cheaper alternatives to Bessie the Cow and Nigel the Pig.
bon appetit!
P.S. YOU eat meat at almost every meal, just not cow parts! If any of your foods are made with vegetables or grains (especially "organic") they contain "allowable" quantities of bug parts as legislated by various governments, since it is impossible to harvest crops without trapping bugs!

well, I'd like a vegetarian to actually justify to me why they don't... the best answer I have ever gotten is "cruelty" but you know, logic says that even if you dont eat meat you are still harming the earth and its denizens, you squish bugs with your mean ole' car..you eat bacteria when you eat veggies etc. not eating meat is a choice, eating meat is an instict. your not going to make the world a better place by changing your diet, sorry..thanks come again.
if you want to try and make the world a better place then for gods sake actually do something.
this answer turned out to be lots longer than I fugured it would, short answer? I justify eating meat because if I wasnt meant to then maybe the deer would have evolved thumbs and shot ME before i shot IT...

I have a bumper sticker that says I LOVE ANIMALS... BECAUSE THEY TASTE SO GOOD. If we didn't eat meat we would have more cows and chicken, and pigs and deer and every animal in the world running around and eating people .like tigers and bears you should ask a eagle why it eats meat and not vegetables or ask a spider why it spins a web so it can caught a stalk of celery no so it can eat meat. people should eat meat don't eat 27 pounds of meat (red Meat) a day. But just think of all the vegetables that are not real good for you you should think about that and try to get back to me

"The "to each his own" adage is irrelevant when it comes to systematic suffering; supporting an industry which tortures and kills 27 billion animals each year is morally reprehensible to say the least. There is no justification for anyone to eat flesh in our society, and it's speciesist to think that their suffering is a matter of opinion or taste preference. You would never dare to say "Well, I don't rape women, but if you want to ..." and in the same respect, compassionate people have a moral obligation to speak up about the suffering of animals whose lives are shittier than any other living being on the face of the planet.
Seriously. If you can walk through a shed filled with 10,000 birds who will never know anything but mesh wire and darkness, if you can hold one of them in your hands as their head slumps over from exhaustion ... if you can do all that and still think that anyone has some justification for eating chickens or their eggs, you need to seriously evaluate some things. To pay for the suffering of another living being is always wrong, period."

because, then you will live LONGER.. meat, has some fats, but there are healthy and non-healthy fats..now, I am not saying go and eat a ton of bacon, but fish, some chicken breats, is good for you..meat includes protein, which is also healthy..again so do vegetables....we could argue about this...I am a non-veggie, I like meat..but I like salads, too.. you just have to find the right combination, that makes it a healthy choice..now I am trying to keep an open mind so please no name callings..
alos, if you live on plants, your skin won't be as beautiful..(clinicaally proven) also, meat has lots of amino acids, and fatty acids(OMEGA-3..), that vegetables, don't have that strenghten your immune system...and give you big muscles..(I have never seen somebody who was a vegetarian and was a bodybuilder..)....and if weren't "created" to eat, meat, then why does out teeth, have the properties of a vegetable, and a meat eater,...??anyone because we need it..
overall GIMME A HAMBURGER....:p:p
YEAH U.S. BABY!

There are some people who need meat metabolically based on their ancestry. Really, I think it's more of an addiction than a real need though. I come from a long line of farmers (unfortunately everything got sold off last generation to factory farms, sad.) and my grandfather worked for a dairy. It took me years to go veggie because I always felt dragged down if I went without meat too long, but I gradually went longer and longer and was finally able to be healthy. The biggest problem I have now is the rediculously high sodium content in most meat substitutes. I am on a low sodium diet!
Really, many people can't afford to go veggie. Meat is much more satisfying than many alternatives. You need less of it to feel full, even though it costs more. I thought veggie would be cheaper, but it's not. Not by a long shot.
It is definately cleaner. I don't have to scrub grease off my stove, and it's much quicker to prepare. Steam, saute, etc. Never heat up my house with the dang broiler again. But for many it's simply not practical. It takes commitment, you have to learn how to cook all over again. I was taught to plan meals by deciding what your meat(main course) was and chosing your sides around it, now I have to think completely differently. That's one heck of an adjustment for someone, and then you have to convince the whole family to adjust. I personally didn't go all veggie (and I still eat eggs and dairy, but they come from very happy chickens and cows, I assure you.) until my children saw the movie at meat.org and announced they would never eat storebought animal products again.
Most people these days don't cook at home, most restaurants only carry one or two things on the menu without meat, and even fewer that are vegan and I don't know about you, but I am not amused at being presented with a plate of pale limp lettuce, a cucumber slice and a couple of cherry tomatoes. I don't know about you, but I've got 20 exra pounds in my butt and a rather large bosom to maintain and that's not going to do it for me.
Before I gave up meat, my excuse was- I buy meat raised in humane conditions in order to encourage more farmers to raise their animals in humane conditions. If the only people who eat meat are the people who don't care about animals, then nothing will ever change.
Also, I don't discriminate in nature. If I gave up everything that feels, communicates and has a soul according to my own belief system, I'd die. So go organic! Be kind to your potatos, because potatos have feelings too, and they are really good with organic salsa (because tomatos have feelings too!)

Protein. There may be other sourcs, but meat has many nutrients that are beneficial to us. And besides that, my own personal opinion (being a Christian) is that of the bible, wherein God tells Adam that animals are for eating. It's all up to the individual. I believe that if someone believes eating meat is wrong, then they must abide by that belief. If you don't believe there's anything wrong with it, then that;s fine too, as long as you stick with your own beliefs at the end of the day, and you make up your own mind.

Yes... in two words, Animal Protein....
You need it to be strong and healthy.... I have not heard of a strong veggie eating only tofu and/or soy based protein... yes, I know it is also good, along with grain protein, but it is not the same.... For big, strong muscles that will help you on your daily physical activities you need the prtoein found on meat. (take for example Omega 3 found on Salmon)

From a social standpoint, no, not really, except it is damn good. From a modern economic standpoint, if this country shut down the protien complex, our economy and society would crumble overnight. So thank everyone around you for grossing you out with thier hamburgers and pork chops because meat production and sales is one of the only things keeping the U.S.'s head above water right now.
