aerosol is a fine mist. the particles may be triggering reflexes in the upper trachea (windpipe) and bonchials below. usually after a few treatments patients have less or no coughing from this mechanism. but aerosol is also moisture. the moisture loosens secretions down below allowing them to move out of the lung. as the mucus moves upward cough reflex makes them come out. so coughing can be and is a protective mechanism in itself. spasmodic coughing, that which is uncontrolled and continuous is another issue. but it sounds like your s is just the type related to mist and reflex.
