My dad is 77 years old and he has just admitted to the hospital due to Lung infection, and he has heart failure also. Any chance that he will develop a more severe illness?

pneumonia is a lung infection caused by a variety of germs, which i wont describe but believe me there are a variety of them. common pneumonias are sometimes referred to as community pneumonias due to thier commoness of occurence and easily curable.

but lung infection does not have to be pneumonia. other pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria, mycobacteria, viruses, molds etc produce infections which can be isolated to the lung/s. when the infection leaves the lung via the blood then it is referred to as diseminated; for instance coccydiomycosis.

in the case of your dad the infection is likely pneumonia. the heart failure probably was and is preexisting but lung infections can exacerbate heart malfunction.

will he develop more sever illness? at his age possibly. depends on an accurate diagnoses, who and how its being treated, and his ability to fend off a pathogenic attack.

I don't think Pneumonia is the same. A lung infection is when the mucus or the lung it self is infected. Pneumonia means that you have too much mucous in your lung.

I had a huge hole in the lowest lobe of my lung when I was younger so I had to have that lobe removed.

I got pneumonia 4 times before I had the surgery. I was in the hospital 4 times for up to 6 weeks at a time. I couldn't breath without coughing.. too much fluid/mucous in my lung.

An infection means that it's gonna affect every cell in your body.. not just your lung. Blood flow carries the infection to other parts of your body.

Hopefully iv fluids and breathing treatments and antibiotics will be able to clear it up for your Pop.
You're Dad will be in my prayers.

I was in the hospital about a month ago and I had both a lung infection and pneumonia, so no they are not the same thing. The infection forms a pocket in the lung in the form of an abscess. If he is in the hospital they will give him meds to help this and if he caught it in time then maybe he won't get any sicker... good luck to you and your dad

I have also heard the same thing, that smokers will often get respiratory infections soon after quitting. If that is true, I am not sure why that would happen -- maybe the stress of quitting smoking? A change in lung function? In any case, I hope your friend gets better soon.
