Unfortunately one or two of your answerers are under the illusion that sushi = raw fish!! lol!!
At least YOU know better..! I like lots of different sorts of sushi! I have to say that if you're not sure about eating the ones with raw fish in, then you should try some that only have a SMALL amount of raw fish, and more sushi rice, vegetables, shiitake, etc. If there's only a little bit of raw fish (or raw fish eggs!) you really don't notice it!!
My personal favourite is inari-zushi - that's little pockets made of thinly sliced tofu, which is fried, cooled, then boiled in seasoned water..! They're filled with sushi rice - sometimes with chopped vegetables mixed in, it depends on what part of Japan you're in when you eat them! Unfortunately I doubt if you'll find them outside Japan.
: (
I like lots of the others too, but I'm afraid that I'm normally too busy eating to take any notice of the names...!
; )
Oh, and make sure the raw fish is of the ultimate freshness!! As others have said, if you can SMELL it that much it's too old! Sashimi (raw fish) is supposed to have a delicate flavour..! And that goes with a delicate smell! Any sashimi that stinks is dangerous to eat.

If you can "smell" the "raw stuff," don't eat it. Fresh fish doesn't smell like anything... and sushi should always be very fresh.
I personally love sushi. I eat a lot of different types, mostly raw.
You should also find a good place... don't go to chain places (like Sushi Boy). Ask others for recommendations.

I used to be just like you until I actually tried sushi for the first time. I love it now...my suggestion is to start off with something that is cooked first such as an avacado roll, or one of the tempura rolls(they have things like fried shrimp or crawfish) dip it in a little soy sauce and enjoy...if you like the texture and the taste then I would steadily move into the raw category, but if you are uncomfortable with raw then it is perfectly fine to just eat the cooked...You should at least try it once, but if you do dont order a ton of it because if you end up hating it then you are out a good bit of cash...if you like it great, if not thats fine too! everyone has a preference in food, but if all of your friends have that little japanese restaurant that they all love to go to dont feel like you have to skip out just order something like terryaki chicken or another cooked item on the menu like tempura...they are great choices too, and you wont have to miss out on good company!

It's extremely healthy, low fat, low cal. It's the best excuse in the world to eat wasabi. Not all sushi contains raw fish; some is vegetarian.

Not all sushi is uncooked.
Try an avocado roll or cucumber roll or california roll to start with.
If you like those, try other varieties.
There are plenty of types of sushi that are fully cooked, don't worry.
Go On!!! Ya know ya wanna try it.

If you never try anything that to you may sound a little weird, you'll never get to enjoy different things. I have had sushi, snails, emu, buffalo...all kinds of things, and suprise!!! I liked it. Give it a try....btw, sushi is not cooked.

I can't stand fish as a rule, but the notion of serving any meat raw sickens me to no end, especially with all the risks that result from such behavior.
