I'm just getting into sushi, and I really like some of it....but shy away from the unusual stuff. I like tuna, and salmon and shrimp and the California rolls as well ( even though they are traditional ). Also what do you like to eat it with? ( wasabi, ginger, soy sauce, or something else)

My favorite is really fresh sashimi (white tuna especially but also toro and salmon) and just a couple of rich rolls like unagi with avocado, salmon skin roll, soft-shell crab tempura roll, or spicy tuna roll. It's fine to stick with things that are less exotic (oftentimes the really unusual stuff like uni is a very acquired taste) but make sure that you branch out enough to find out what you like. And wasabi, ginger and soy sauce are all good accompaniments but i always take my first taste with nothing at all and well-made sushi tastes best just the way it is.

I like sashimi. Anything featuring red snapper or salmon, my favorite fish. I have also had fugu, although it can be deadly to eat it if you don't choose a reputable chef. Even then, it is still a little risky. It is very tasty, but I was scared for about 24 hours afterward. I like either wasabi or ginger for a condiment, sometimes soy sauce, but never too much. Japanese food is meant to capture the natural essence of the food, not cover it up.

My son says the most popular piece of sushi is the California roll. It is usually made with carrots, cucumbers, a small bit of avacado and cooked crabmeat. It is very popular and very inexpensive. My son likes to take soy sauce, use a piece of two of ginger and just enough wasabi to give it flavor. Have you tried tempora. There are various types of tempora that you can eat with sushi.

I like unagi, and salmon. Also the place we go to in Lakewood CO does a spicy salmon roll that is really tasty. I like to eat it with wasabi mixed into a bit of tamari. The pickled ginger is really meant to clean your palate between types of sushi, so that the taste is clearer. I also like the egg sushi, but I can't remember what it is really called. Because it is usually prepared with a little strip of seaweed across it, my friends always called it "seatbelt sushi", so that's what I always think of it as. LOL

I personally only like the kind that has just vegetables and the like in it with no fish. I don't think it can be found in many places, but I live in an area where vegetarians rule. I can't stand eating fish at all, raw or cooked.

I love wasabi and ginger. My room mate likes to dare me to put a significant amount of wasabi in my mouth because it never seems to phase me when smaller amounts make her cry.

Fantasy rolls. They are like California rolls, but instead of rice on the outside, they come in a thin rice skin. You taste more filling and less rice. I like it with wasabi and soy. Sometimes peanut sauce, although it does not really go with sushi, but fantasy rolls are somewhat like vietnamese winter rolls and are great with peanut sauce...yummm.

The tempura ones are great. I also like the hosomakis which contain avocado, cucumber etc, maki, and futomakis which are the large rolls like the california rolls among others. I eat them all with soy sauce & ginger.

tempura shrimp roll: cooked
softshell crab roll: cooked (amazing)
philadelphia roll: creamcheese and salmon
avacado roll
spicy crawfish roll: Mmmm
if you want to try some of the raw rolls I would opt for tuna because it has a good texture and a very mild flavor

all eaten with a touch of soy sauce
