A vegetarian diet is best if you are considering giving up eating meat. You will have more chance of succeeding that way as all you are eliminating is meat.
I am vegan and don't miss anything in my diet. I am this way for spiritual reasons, plus dairy is contaminated with pus from the growth hormones and antibiotics fed to cattle.
There is an allowable limit however the pus is enough to turn anyone off dairy.
The choice is yours however, giving up meat and not contributing to the inhumane way animals are treated is a great move.
You have my best wishes.
From reading another answer you received, footballs are synthetic, not leather.

For the answerers who don't know the difference, a vegetarian eats no meat. A vegan doesn't eat any animal product, which also rules out dairy, eggs, and honey. They generally avoid leather and silk as well.
Vegetarians will say it's better to be vegetarian. Vegans will say it's better to be vegan. See if you can guess which one I am. ;)
Firstly, one interesting effect of being vegan is that your diet is entirely cholesterol free. Isn't that nice?
Secondly, a vegan can easily get more than enough protein. Beans and nuts are excellent sources. I'm fortunate in that I absolutely love tofu, so I actually probably get -more- protein than I need. (That one needs dairy for these things is certainly a myth—there's nothing in dairy that you can't easily get more healthily from something else.)
A vegan can really get any nutrients a human needs. Sure, you have to pay some attention to what you eat and not do something stupid like simply eating corn and bread for the rest of your life. But it's really not that difficult.
I cold turkeyed straight from full-fledged omnivore to vegan and couldn't possibly be happier. My boyfriend, who's been a vegan for years, is certainly in much better shape than most people. Not sickly, perfectly developed muscularly, never sick...
Bizarrely enough, I don't even care about the animals. I'm vegan strictly because unbiased research suggests that it's healthier.

I think it is just a personal preference. Although a true vegetarian would be pretty much the same as a vegan. Vegan eat no animal products what-so-ever. Most people who claim to be vegetarians, usually consume some form of animal products, like dairy (lacto-) or eggs (ovo-).
I don't thin one is really better than the other. If you are trying to chose one, educate yourself. It always amazes me some of the answers these types of questions get -- some people really have no clue about vegetarianism/veganism.

Vegetarian...i have been one for a long time lol (since i was really little...grow up that way)
Being a vegetarian doesn't limit your choices (like being a vegan) when you eat or dine out
If you were vegan you would have to worry about (not only meat) but dairy, needed nutrients and more while eating and dining out

Laughing about the bird and squirrel answer. A vegetarian diet includes milk, cheese and eggs (which are produced without an animal losing its life to provide those items). However, these days it is unhealthy to eat commercially produced milk, cheese or egg products because of the hormones used to speed up the animal's production of these things for greater profits. I would say if you got your cheese from an organic source, it is not that big of a deal, because those animals would presumably be better cared for than factory farm animals (even commercial dairies are not that kind to animals). I would never eat an egg these days unless it was from someone's backyard flock. I would never drink milk unless it was from someone's small private herd. I don't eat eggs or drink milk, but I do eat cheese. So, just thinking about the hormones in milk and egg production, it would be more healthy to be a vegan.

Vegetarian. As a vegan you miss WAY too much protein and basic minerals in your diet and can have serious health problems from it. If you have to choose one, be vegetarian.

I'm a vegetarian. I prefer it to vegan because i love dairy! Also, it is easier to get all your missing nutrients from not eating meat.

Neither, what the heck is wrong with eating meat? what do you think animals are here for? If you are a vegan you can't like baseball or football because of what they use to make the balls with.
