A defibrillator is a device that's used to shock the heart with electricity back into a normal rhythm when it's in two specific rhythms. The rhythms are called ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation (hence the defibrillator). Both of the rhythms can progress into your heart stopping entirely if they aren't shocked in a reasonable space of time (like 5 minutes). People can also have implanted defibrillators that automatically shock their hearts if they go into one of those two rhythms. Unlike they show on TV all the time, you can NOT shock a flat line (asystole), because it means your heart's electrical system isn't working at all, and so shocking it isn't going to do any good.

A defibrillator sends a shock through your heart. Your heart pumps by pumping blood through it but also there are electrical currents that keep it going to pump it. A defibrillator acts as a jump start in which all the electrical currents are working in unison and not creating an irregular beat or not beat at all.

Yes......see your first answer.....basically it "jump starts" the heart.....or resets it where it can hopefully start beating on its own. We only use it for a couple of dysrhythmias (bad heart beats that we identify on the heart monitor). Usually a defibrillator comes with a monitor.
