No. And here's why.

The medical industry is no longer interested in finding cures for diseases; there's no money in cures. They would much rather develop a drug that curbs a sickness's symptoms and keep the afflicted dependent on medication for the rest of their lives.

Since cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease it seems logical to try and use the revolutionary gene therapy to cure it. Also cystic fibrosis would seem like a target over other diseases for gene therapy because the disease is caused by mutations in one gene. Gene therapy is when patients receive a copy of a normal, healthy version of the faulty gene. This procedure looks very promising on the outside because it would correct the source of the problem, but in reality it has faced many obstacles and to date has not produced promising results. Another way many scientist are researching to cure cystic fibrosis is drug therapy. Drug therapy is when a patient takes medications to control the defective gene. So far this method only reduces or controls symptoms of cystic fibrosis and the medications must be taken regularly.

People with CF need daily chest physiotherapy, which involves vigorous massage to help loosen the sticky mucus. Parents of a child with CF are taught by hospital staff how to do this. Older children and adults with CF can be taught to do this for themselves.

People with CF also need to have any chest infection treated quickly with antibiotics. The usual childhood vaccinations, such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and DTP (diptheria, tetanus and whooping cough) are important for people with CF, and they should also be vaccinated against flu and pneumococcus to help prevent chest infections.

With each meal or snack, most people with CF need to take capsules that supply the missing pancreatic enzymes and allow proper digestion.

There is a range of other possible treatments, according to each person’s condition. These may include:

* daily oral or inhaled antibiotics to counter lung infection,
* inhaled anti-asthma therapy,
* corticosteroid tablets,
* dietary vitamin supplements, especially A and D,
* inhalation of a medication called pulmozyme to make the sputum less sticky,
* medicines to relieve constipation or to improve the activity of the enzyme supplements,
* insulin for CF-related diabetes,
* medication for CF-associated liver disease,
* oxygen to help with breathing,
* in severe cases, a lung or heart and lung transplant operation,
* help to overcome fertility problems,
* counselling to help cope with the psychological aspects.

i agree with one of the responders in that drug companies make money from drugs. but do i personally believe there is or will be a cure for CF? yes. in fact if the sientific medical community were to get together and share their research for the last 30 years i believe they are already holding the cure or on the verge of it. certainly in the last 30 years the advances and treatment of CF have escalated faster than that for cancer as far as i am concerned.

to go back to the drug companies, niether CF or Cancer are the major $$$ earners for them. they make much much more on the basics like, erection concerns, beauty concerns, antibiotics, cold and flu remedies, etc. but they plow a lot of money into research and probably hold some keys to cures for both of those diseases.
