Types A and E hepatitis usually resolve over time. If you're traveling to a country where hepatitis A is prevalent, two doses of a vaccine can prevent the disease. There's no vaccine for hepatitis E. For hepatitis B, anti viral medications may help some patients. But like type A, a vaccine that's given in three doses can prevent the disease in the first place. (In fact, hepatitis B is the only STD that's preventable with a vaccine, according to Planned Parenthood.) For hepatitis C and D, interferon and other drugs may help some patients, but there is no vaccine for either type.

Because types A and E usually go away over time, neither is likely to lead to chronic disease. Types B and C, however, can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer if not treated; type D can also result in liver cancer.

Hepatitis is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis

virus. Basically, there are two main strains of the hepatitis virus.

Hepatitis A is more common and more contagious. The chances of

complete recovery from hepatitis A are very good.

Hepatitis B, on the other hand, is much more serious. With

hepatitis B, the symptoms are more severe and last longer than with

hepatitis A. One of the more serious outcomes of hepatitis B is

chronic liver disease.

TRANSMISSION: Transmission of hepatitis B is very similar to

transmission of the AIDS virus. Common sources of infection include

blood transfusions, intravenous drug abuse, needle punctures from

acupuncture or tattooing, and sexual contact.

The virus can spread through contact with infected saliva, nasal

mucus, sperm and blood. Hepatitis B may also be transmitted through

pregnancy from the infected mother to her unborn baby.

SYMPTOMS: The symptoms of any type of hepatitis include fatigue or

extreme weakness, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of

the eyes), nausea, dark brownish urine, fever, and abdominal

discomfort. The severity and range of symptoms vary from case to

case.
Although there is presently no known cure for hepatitis

B, a vaccination is available. Health care workers are especially

Hep B can be cured but it's rare. However, there is treatment.

Hep C can be cured, the treatment is very rough, very toxic, with loads of side effects. It also depends on what type of Hep C you have, as some respond to the chemotherapy better than others.

Hep A is self limiting and doesn't progress.

Not everyone gets sick, and not everyone is a candidate for treatment. Don't despair...see a hepatologist...p

It's not curable but it is controllable. It can be very dangerous if you don't keep track of it and it IS transmitted just like HIV or AIDS. So protect the ones you love.

There are at least five different kinds of hepatitis, probably more. Hep A will go away on its own. Hep B can be prevented with a vaccine, but will likely go away on its own. Hep C is the nasty one, no vaccine and it can become chronic. Hep D and E are not as bad as Hep C, but I can't remember much about them

Ignore the answer above, the answer is Yes, maybe and no. Here's a simple way to look at it, and yes to future posters, I know it's not exactly accurate, but it works for a simple answer.

Hep A - yes
Hep B - Maybe yes maybe no
Hep C - No

I could go into the datails of which is self limiting and blahh blahh, but I won't, you can read more here if you like.
