Whenever we host we tell people to bring themselves and their drink of choice. This guy is a friend of a friend and his fiance is completly obnoxious. My husband and I are dreading this. Any recommendations?

Either go with a good heart and a good dish and take the opportunity given to you get to know them a little bit more (you may find something you like about them) or don't go at all. If they sent you an invitation they obviously like you both but if you don't go at least send them a thank you card for the invite and an apology for not being able to go.

The more important question is, 'Why are you going at all?' If you don't care for these people, the logical thing to do would be to politely excuse yourselves from attending.

If you MUST go, however, then the fact that you don't like these people shouldn't really have any bearing on what you bring along. Bring whatever you would normally bring to a barbeque, whether that is hamburger meat, chips, drinks, or whatever. Your liking the host has nothing to do with your choices in what to bring.

Call to make sure it's o.k. and bring another friend you can talk to so you don't have to spend so much time with the obnoxious two. Take along a basket of cookies and whatever you want to drink.

Bring watermelon. Everybody loves watermelon. You don't want to have to invest a lot of prep time into something that you have to turn over to someone you don't like...it's the worst feeling in the world when people you don't even like reject food you have put a lot of effort into. Watermelon always works. Just pick one up at the store and slice it into chunks right on the patio.

I don't understand why you are even going. You don't like the host, or his fiance. Why set yourself up for a miserable evening? Why don't you and your husband just go out for dinner someplace nice, instead. Or ask friends over -- friends you genuinely like and whose company you enjoy.
What you have outlined sounds like you're paying 'way too high a price for a free meal!

I don't understand what your motivation for going is. If its just "a friend of a friend", and you don't care for them why are you going? I personally would not want someone that called my fiancee obnoxious at my BBQ anyway.

If you and your husband are "dreading" this, then what are you looking to get out of going? Usually when we do something we don't want to do it is because we WANT something out of it.

Don't go. Life's too short to spend a couple miserable hours with people you can't stand. Get a flat tire, a 24 hour virus, whatever it takes.

A bowl of civility; a bottle of not so expensive red wine; and a nice excuse to go home early. (maybe some earplugs too? )
