Don't assume anything. It will just make you stress out. Get tested for HPV. Next time you go to your OBGYN ask them test you, they will be able to tell you what it is caused by.

OK, take a deep breath. IN addition to your pap, they should test for the presence of HPV. Having HPV is not the end of the world. Yes, it can be emotionally difficult but it is so common, over 20 million sexually active people have it. So don't be ashamed- it isnt that big of a deal. However, with the presence of lesions, it is very important that you get screened yearly to make sure that there is no cancer present.
I would say yes, assume that you have HPV. But don't let it get you down. In most cases, the virus clears on it's own within 5 years. Good luck to you and take care of yourself.

Hello, It's quite understandable for you to be worrying. It is always a very stressful experience to hear about an abnormal pap-smear. There are many causes to having an abnormal pap. I've had several of them turn up, with nothing bad turning out of going to get another. Having sex too soon before a pap is one of the most common causes. I would just recommend to go in again, and have the follow-up done to make sure that nothing's going on. If something does come of it, then it is good it's caught and can be addressed. Sometimes, your body just has cells that are odd, and are gone by the next pap, though, so try not to stress out. :-)

Nearly all abnormal PAPs are from HPV. There are very occassional exceptions - and I wonder if those are not false negative results on the test. I imagine you might find it disconcerting that you may have HPV but really it is virtually the same virus that causes warts on your hand. And we go out and get some over-the-counter medication for those warts and don't give it another thought. So don't get too upset. But perhaps this is a good reminder to remember to use barrier methods especially with a new sex partner.
Good luck.

I wouldn't assume anything, just be prepeared for everything. It could be nothing or it could be something. I've had two abnormal paps, both came back to not be HPV. As for people saying don't worry about having HPV because it is common, while it may be common, it can be deadly to women. There are some strains of HPV that are known to cause cervical cancer. HPV is serious business, no matter how common. Depending on your age, you may want to talk to your doctor about the new HPV vaccine that is coming out. It protects against 4 strains of HPV known to cause cervical cancer. Please, talk to you doctor and know all the facts before you just stop worrying about anything.

ASC stands for atypical squamous cells. Squamous cells form the surface of your cervix. ASC is divided into two categories:
ASC-US means that although some of your cells are not normal, your doctor may not know why the cells changed or what impact it will have on you. These changes are usually not serious and may be caused by a vaginal infection or infection with a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). Your doctor may want to do a follow-up examination such as a repeat Pap smear or HPV testing.
ASC-H means that some of your cells are not normal and there is a small possibility that they may be precancerous. Your doctor will probably want to perform a colposcopy, which will allow your doctor to more closely examine your cervix. (See below for more information on colposcopy.)

Your Gyno should do a biopsy to tell you if it is or is not HPV.
HPV can cause either low grade or high grade lesions, so I'd expect the worst and hope for the best.
