Having spent several years in japan I can tell you in the modern urban area's it's like being in NYC. The typical Japanese worker consumes as much coffee as we do or more! In almost any street corner you will find soda vending machines that sell coffee or tea ( both regular and green) in a can right next to soda and juices. The little Starbucks frappacinio bottles we have here they have there own brands there.
In japan you can get most anything from vending machines if you know where to look. This includes beer ( KIRIN + SAPPORO+ASAHI) are the three most popular, as well as sake ( there are over 2000 licensed brewers of sake in japan) to name any would be unfair as to survive in that kind of competition you have to be better than good. There is plum wine usually served as an aperitif but it was a part of Japanese home medicine, it was given for upset stomachs. Next is the blue collar workers special, SHOCHU of which there are two types (KORUI) which is distilled multiple time like vodka to get a clean taste and then there is (HONKAKU) it is a single distillation with minimal filtering so it is cloudy and had floating particles. Real down to earth get you drunk fast so you can go to bed and be back at work well rested the next day! Over the last thirty year the beverage company Suntory has been a growing power house and in the many products they make a truly great whiskey, a beverage not previously well known in japan has com forth. Lastly there is a tremendous market for soda, fruit juice, and health drinks just like here. Below is a link to a vending machine supplier so you can see what the typical man or woman on the street is drinking! I hope this helped to answer your question!

Japanese people drink a lot of OTHER kinds of tea, too...my favorite is "mugi-cha", or barley tea. There's also "kocha" - black tea, and milk tea ("miruku tii")...and various other tea flavors. As far as traditional drinks, though, it's pretty much just tea and water. And alcohol, of course :p

As far as brand name drinks...there's just as many as there are in America. Some of the more popular are sports-type drinks like "Dakara", "Aquarius", and "Pocari Sweat" (they also have Gatorade, but it tastes just like the other Japanese sports drinks)

Soda (which they call "juice", by the way - though that's what they call fruit juice as well) there's a lot of Fanta, Ginger Ale, and Coke. C.C. Lemon is a popular Japanese soda, too.

Hope that helps :)

Edit: I forgot soymilk! Oops!
Also, there are a variety of dairy milk- and yogurt-based drinks here, like Calpis and Yakult.

The best non-alcoholic Japanese drinks are the soda known as Ramune and the dairy-based drink called Calpico.

Don't know Japanese drinks... but there's tons of Korean drinks I could tell you about that are non-alcoholic...

Plum juice - Maeshil

Sweet rice drink - Shikhae

Pomegranate drink - Sungyou

Sorry it didn't exactly answer your question... ^.^ But hope that helps a bit!
