You really don't want to know what goes into it. If you know, you will never touch another one.

Do you know what the term "Natual Casings" means?
I grew up in the Chicago area where hotdog place are almost as common as McDonalds. I also grew up hearing WGN radio. At noon they do (did?) the farm report. One thing they talked about was Baloney Bulls and their price. I always wondered what "Baloney Bulls" were and why they had special bulls to make baloney. Well it turns out that both hot dogs and baloney use a special kind of bull. They are the older "stud" bulls. Once the bull can't, ummm "mate", they don't simply put him out to pasture. He becomes baloney. This is a bull that is VERY VERY tough. He must be ground over and over again to be of any use. Nothing goes to waste. Hot dogs also have chicken, turkey, pig, etc. as part of their makeup. The ham, ribs, pork steaks, pork chops, and bacon parts of the pig are used for just that. The remaining parts become ground meat for hot dogs. Remember the natural casings question? This is the intestine, cleaned out, then stuffed with all the ground parts.
Knowing all of this, I still eat hot dogs with natural casings. In fact I have two Chicago style dogs in the frig right now. I think I'll go have lunch!
(If this bothers you, don't ask about Jello.)

I saw a documentary show on how the hotdog evoloved the other day on the history channel and they show how they used all the leftover pig and cow parts as well as spoiled meat to make hotdogs. They grind it up and then use intestines for the covering to hold it all together. That was when they first started making hotdogs though, now you can buy all beef ones that are better for you but still may have some unwanted parts in them.

of course. I'm surprised you never smelled it. if you put a hot dog in mountain dew it will separate and all the different pig parts will separate, you should try it sometimes.
