I nominate leather. It allowed the construction of harnesses and warm durable clothing.
After that, I'd say basic tools (hatchet or chisel) that allowed the construction of other objects and collection of materials.
Then metals I suppose. The pyramids where build without wheels and colleges existed before the printing press. Not that these wheren't great inventions that changed the live of countless people.
Enjoy deciding what the greatest invention ever was!

I would nominate the printing press as it allowed all other inventions since to not be forgotten by later generations. However, simple machines (wheel, lever, inclined plane, pulley) are collectively what gave birth to the beginnings of other inventions period.
But for the ultimate invention, I would nominate not so much an invention but an innovation, the development of agriculture. This innovation changed the nature of society overall and introduced the concepts of land as property.
But in terms of use in our daily lives, I'll return to the simple machines. They are what allows us to drive to and from work, open a can of food, and flush the toilet.

The Towel
"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical
value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V,..."
