Well, there are numerous ways of taking revenge, which will make you feel better and will also make for a good story in the future. So if the van is still there, go over at lunch time and try one of the following:
1. Draw a 'comedy' penis in the dirt on his van, or write a swear word. Perhaps you could question his sexuality or the size of his manhood.
2. Casually run your keys down the side of his van.
3. Slash his tyres.
4. Smash his headlights and/or rear lights hazzards and indicators.
5. Cut his break cables.
6. Pour sugar in his petrol tank.
7. Snap his windscreen wipers off.
8. Snap his wing mirrors off.
9. Break into his boot and plant some drugs in there, then shop him to the fuzz.
10. Bend his aerial.

Nope, never done it to anyone and thank goodness I've not had it done to me. If I were you I would have been very tempted to get out and let him know that you had been sitting there clearly waiting for the spot with your indicator on and that it was extremely bad mannered and arrogant of him to steal the space. Perhaps he didn't see you, but that is very unlikely. Sadly, if you do approach people they are likely just to ignore you or be abusive, no one has any manners any more.
Have you seen the film 'Fried Green Tomatoes and the Whistle Stop Cafe'? - there is a really funny scene with space stealing in that - I wont spoil it, rent the movie and see!!

No, I certainly have not. I think that with this sort of thing we have to continue to rely on consideration, fair play and good manners.
I think that you should certainly have pointed out to this person that you were there first. The only possible excuse that could be offered in mitigation, is that, he did not notice you. Only you can judge if that might be a satisfactory explanation. If his response however, was tough, then that really is sad isn't it? This type of response is sometimes the cause of violence, because people feel powerless and frustrated. White van man you say-----probably in a hurry.

Personally, I'd have slapped his face with my gloves and insisted he return here at dawn with a second and either pistols or sword.
Alternatively, I'd have tutted and carried on crawling whilst looking for another space which wasn't marked for disabled, parents with kids, or the myriad of other people who seem to be entitled to park anywhere whilst I have to park three streets away from where I need to be and still come back to a blasted ticket because I parked during the wrong phase of the moon or something...
Yes, I have issues on this subject and feel justified in this.

I've had that happen to be before in Asda car park. I beeped my horn a lot and jestured that I had been waiting for that space, not swearing jestures. Luckily somebody else just came out so I put my foot down, but tried to get out of the car fast so that I could walk past them huffing and puffing to myself that some people were downright rude and inconsiderate.
My frined carries round these certificates that have a RUDE PARKER ALERT on them, they are a certificate congratulating therm on their terrible parking and hope that they get struck by a thousand locusts etc, you put in on their windshield.

I would have got out my car and gone up to the person and said [ Can you explain why you parked there when you saw my indicator on. Start out politely and explain you have been waiting for an hour to park and that was my spot. Ask them How long have you been waiting.

UUGH!
that happened to me at the grocery store during a 'snow storm' (in va. - right, a storm) .
a woman driving a tiny little corvette convertable pulled into a handicapped space sideways and got out with no problem and ran into the store.
i was driving a '77 ford f250 with 3 layers of solid steel welded onto the steel parts (the entire truck).
i rammed that corvette!! not a scratch on me.
then i left her a note telling her why she had no more car.

I have had that done to me and I was pretty darn angry. I waited for the person to get out of her jeep (it was summer so she didn't have the top and sides on) and I said, "Hey, couldn't you see I was waiting?" The snotty girl replied with an "F-You"...So, I went on my way and parked a few rows away. I got out of my vehicle and headed over to the jeep (the rude girl was already well inside the store). While enroute, I conjured up a slimy snot wad spit luggie. As I passed the jeep I released the luggie with excellent precision onto her steering wheel, and put another on the diriver's seat. Once satisfied, I carried on with my day of shopping.

Been a former white van man myself I know the position he was in. Still, I find that inexcusable and rude. There is no point confronting that idiot and he just wouldn't care. Personally, I would of gone back and let the air out of tyres, petty I know but it would have felt satisfying.

Have never done it and it was bound to do your head in but there are no rules to state this is not allowed. It is all down to ethics.
I probably would have told the van driver where to go nad then moved on to find another spot...
or sneaked back and scratched the van haha..
