I'm thinking of taking a 3 week holiday to Thailand next year. Hoping to spend approx. 2 days in Bangkok and then taking a train down south and spending the rest of the time going between beaches. Where are the nicest beaches to visit?

phuket has so many beaches
i was there with a couple of mates last year and stayed at patong
beach there is pretty good but a few miles down the road is karon and the beach there is amazing, pure white sands and very quiet as is kata beach which is close too.
with a bit of exploring u can find so many totally deserted beaches if thats you thing. hotels are about as cheap as ull find anywhere in the world too.
phi phi is very nice too but gets busy at certain times of the day as loads of day trippers visit on boats
my suggestion is hire a moped and explore cos only u know exactly what ure after

If you want to visit many beaches and islands, I will have to say in Phuket. What you can do is stay off Patong Beach, the others will be just as good but less human traffic. In between, you can go island hopping, where there are some nice islands to explore. Then head for a stay at Phi Phi Island.

Tire of that place, take a boat ride to Krabi and do a beach resort stay. Also at Koh Phangnan nearby. So you can get a wide selection of beaches and islands resorts to stay in that vicinity.

All starting at Phuket.

The most popular is Phuket Island and its surrounding islands. There's Koh Samui on the side of the country. Believe it or not, if you're trully looking for unspoiled and really clean beaches, the best ones are the fisherman villages. Those places are definitely not the tourist destination areas. But, if you want to go to a beach where you wanna find a bar, pub, disco, shoppings, then your choice would be different.

Well, depending on what you like in a beach - I might make a tour by going from bkk - cha'am/hua hin - then, for me, the beaches south of there are spectacular and not well traveled - Pranburi, Baan Sapaan - then you can go down to Chumphon and across to Ranong and work your way down the Andaman Coast to the really touristed places like Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi etc..

Have an amazing trip!

Nai Harn beach at the southernmost tip of phuket island is isolated and quiet . It has a white sandy beach with a shallow bay the Royal Meridian Yacht Club Hotel is on this bay its pricey but well worth a visit.

Take a tent and go out to the small islands in Pang Nga bay you'll need to take your food with you because the very best beaches have nothing on them other than monitor lizards, snakes and small rodents.

You'll also need to tell the botman when to come back and collect you.

YES I'm serious, it is wonderfull if you like great beaches. Look for a speedboat at rawai beach in Phuket to take you out

Try Klong Nin beach in Koh Lanta..It's beautiful, cheaper than Phuket and Koh Samui, nice people, many other activities to do in the island (apart from just getting lazy on the beach)..

There are endless beautiful beaches in Thailand, it's when you turn away from the sea and face inland that you have to decide what you want to see there. Do you want to see high rise hotels, fast food joints and girlie bars, or do you want to see bungalows and forest? My information is out of date so I'll leave that for you to research further.
Don't forget to check the weather, the rainy season begins in August. I always found the best months to be in southern Thailand were January to May, but maybe their weather is as unpredictable as our now. Friends of mine went on my recommendation in November or December and where we had beautiful weather, they had three weeks of solid rain.
