When it comes to tooth brushes, pastes, and floss, anything that gets you motivated is the better product. If you like your daughter's my little pony rotating tooth brush and it gets you jazzed, then that is the brush for you. If you like the large tooth brush with the bristle that rotate and wrap around your teeth then go for it. If you like the brush with the over sized senior citizen grip, Well you know.
Just do it, Regularly and avoid medium and hard bristles.
Floss, Brush, Listerine.

I think the jagged, zig zag bristles help to get between teeth and into the little grooves in the back teeth a little more than the straight edged bristles do.
And soft bristles (lol- sorry) do help keep the enamel (thats the stuff that plaque and tartar break down causing cavities) from wearing down.
Try flossing, though, if you prefer to use the straight edged brushes. Be sure to "brush" the gums and tooth under the gums, and in between the teeth, with the floss. Also, try to work the floss to as far over on the top of the tooth (the part under the gums) as you can, and brush that area. Thats the part of my teeth that get the cavities first, lol.
And lastly, use a nice mouthwash with flouride when youre all finished. =)
I am sorry for over-answering, lol. And I couldnt resist the soft bristle comments, hahaha =)
Good luck with your teeth, and remember to show them off by smiling!

I think the jagged or zig zag type ones are easier for reaching the back teeth. I always go for the flat one though as I find 'soft' one mainly in that range. I have tried both, but end up going to the flat kind. As long as you floss I don't think it matters much.

toothbrushes and bristle shapes and handle shapes and electric vs manual all fall into the category of personal presence.
the main thing you will hear from anyone in dentistry is to make sure the bristles are soft or extra soft because medium and hard bristles will actually saw into the enamel.
make sure regardless of the toothbrush type that you get the bristles close to the gum line if not below to do the most effective job and gently massage the tissues as you remove debris and plague
