I don't think there really is a set amount, but it obviously should be within your budget. I think back to school shopping has gotten way out of hand. It used to be basically fillers for the wardrobe. Like a new pair of shoes, maybe a couple of sweaters, and some shirts. Now basically parents are expected to buy there kids and entire wardrobe.

Unless you are buying the "name" to go with the clothes.
I don't and will not. If my kids want to have $140 sneakers they will have to buy them not me...
