Atheists often have a desire to help other people see the light, by education and the promotion of rational thought, so it's not at all surprising that many atheists come here to contribute to the discussion. We represent the voice of reason that is so desperately needed in the world.

I am 67yo, been a believer for over 55 years and nothing is new to me.
I love the atheist being here. They/you are still searching for something to feel that longing you have in your heart that nothing seems to satisfy.
Well, honey, I'm here to tell ya...you have tried everything else, so try Jesus.
The simple fact you are here proves that God is pricking at your heartstrings trying to get in. He will not always stand at that door and knock.
So, why keep on being so miserable? Come on, ask Him into your life and make Him Lord.
I just never could understand someone knocking something they've never had. If you think you have had it, then you are very wrong. For if you had.....you would miss it.
Do you atheist think for one minute we are foolin'? Why are we so hep on takin' the World to Heaven with us? Don't you just think ..... maybe ...we do have something we Know, we Know! makes a difference in living? Something so wonderful it's unexplainable? But that because of it......we want to share it because we care whether you miss Heaven and Hell is a place to shun?
We do not want one person to miss Heaven. Eternity is a long, eternity is a long....long....time.
You cannot make a difference in my life by being here, it's water on a duck's back....but I promise you my words CAN make a difference in your life.
Just don't know how long we have to keep poppin' that gum in your ear.

Day one wasn't long ago for you was it?Yes it does surprise me a little. And it makes it difficult to get or give good religious or biblical answers. Some atheists are respectful and ask good challenging questions but a lot just post obnoxious stuff that is offensive.
How old are you?(indulge me) You can send it to my contact.I am 43 and been through some rough things in life and know people who have been through rougher stuff than me.

I'm not surprised...many atheists are more comfortable speaking out online than they would be in person. In many areas (like the bible belt) it's just not socially acceptable to be an atheist...so they remain quiet.

There are probably more "closet atheists" than there are "closet homosexuals" (no comparison between the two intended).
One reason it is valuable for atheists to make themselves known is to encourage other atheists to step out of the closet.
I'm 58, that is my real picture, taken last year.
And, here is how I came to be an atheist:

34. not really, because atheism is a religion. religion is just a philosophy of life -- beliefs you base how you live your life. religion implies a spiritual base (regardless of what that might be) and philosophy implies a anti-spiritual base, but what it all comes down to is a way to make sense out of life.
