Well, a contaminate could be anything from water to bits of metal in the fluid. Basically, it's anything you don't want in the hydraulic fluid. Solids are minimized by use of filters. Water is usually eliminated by such methods as heaters or evaporators. Some contaminates could come from the breakdown of the hydraulic fluid as it ages or is heated or other fluids entering the system (like past a seal). The altimate way to purge a system of conatminates is to empty and clean the system.
