I am 14 I have 1 sister and 2 litle brothers who are twin and have tons of energy and all of use kids + my mom wants a dog but my dad wont let us have one. I almost have him hooked on the idea but i cant push him to get a dog and all my attempts pull him away. I need 2 deal with that first. After that i need to pick a dog breed. I want a male dog and i want something small and full of energy that can take care of itself while i am a school for the horrible 8 hours that the state makes me go through. The dog will be mainly my responsibility and i need something that is low matenence. I also want something that is not prone to cancer or stuff like that. What type of Dog should i get and how do i get my dad to let me have one? ohhh. and i want a puppy not a dog.

I have also had a dog most of my life......when i was born my mom got a rotti....then when the rotti was dognapped shortly after we got a beagle basset mix then shortly after we got a dacshaund (the beagle mix needed to be put down and the daschuand was way way way to much to handle even for my mother). I just cant imagine my life with out a dog and my life doesnt feel complete anymore.

honey...dogs don't take care of themselves YOU do. maybe you should think about that before you jump into having a dog. dogs are pack animals...that means they NEED to be with members of the family, that would be you, your siblings and parents. dogs that are left alone, become depressed or even aggressive.
maybe you should sit down and ask your step dad WHY he doesnt want a dog right now.
there are a lot of kids in his house, plus im sure he works. maybe he knows that there wouldnt be alot of time spent with a dog. ( i know you will SWEAR to take care of it, but come on your a teenager! you have friends..you'll want to hang out not dog sit).
NO dog is low mantainance. they need more than just food and water. they need shots, heartworm prevention every month, you need to walk them if you dont have a large yard, toys, collar, id tags, spay/nutering, etc etc. that costs some $$$$$....AND that WILL be your parents responsibility not yours. so perhaps they just can afford to have a dog.
i have 4...vet bills, toys, heartworm prevention, food, etc. *those little emergencies that happen* it adds up. i probably spend about $2,000 a year on that! now i know that is for 4 dogs not one, but seriously...i ONLY have them because i KNOW i can care for them, truly care for them not just feed water and love them.
sit down with your parents. let them know HOW MUCH this means to you, and ask what their reasons are for not getting one.
sometimes...waiting is better, there could be a puppy not born yet that will be yours one day, you just have to be patient!

first to get your dad to get a Puppy you need to show more responsibility around the house like taking out the garbage 5 times a week and doing your own laundry. I think that if you do those things it might show your Dad that you could take care of the Puppy! I think the Kind Of Dog you should get is a Yorkie Terrier. sorry if i type some words wrong. Yorkie Terrier cause they are small and are active they get along with almost any one. Just make sure the have a warm bed at night and some cuddly toys. Also the Yorkie terrier come in different length of hair.

Get a pet is a HUGE COMMITMENT and alot of work. Plus, there are alot of expense with pets. Buying them is only the beginning... you'll have expenses for medical, shots, dog licenses, grooming, food, and other stuff. Puppies are fun, but they are alot of work. You need to be aware of this and make an educated decision about this. I would spend time on the akc website looking at a variety of breeds. Read about the dogs, and make a list of which breeds you think you'd like. Then search on the internet about each of the breeds. Find out if there are breed clubs in you area, and if they have any events coming up. Attend these events so you can see the dogs in person. Talk to people... ask lots of questions. Also go to dog shows. That is a great way of seeing a bunch of dogs, and meeting people to ask questions.
Another way is to get involved with 4H. Do your homework properly and take your time. This is a major decision... and not one to be made on a whim.

You have to be willing to be responsible and willing to help with the puppy. You have to research different breeds. Each breed is different. I have a five month male Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He is a puppy.

If you like dogs, try getting a job as a dog walker. Maybe your father will see that you will take care of it . If and when you are able to get a puppy. you should get a minter dormant pincher or chawawa can't spell.
