My cocker spaniel, age 10, is getting her 2nd operation for knee problems. After surgery she will have to be confined in a crate or play pen for four weeks and ordinarily, she follows me from room to room. How can I make her confinement more bearable for her? I try to be with her nearby as much as possible. I will have to lift her up steps. Not easy when she's 33 lbs.Last time I took her for walks in a little red wagon, tied her to it, but it scared her too bad.

Good answers so far, thanks! I had not thought of putting a piece of my clothing in her pen yet, or sitting with her in it, but I can. I just happen to have one of those toddler play pens, with no bottom. I should get a regular kennel too, maybe in each room.

Set up a play pen (or baby gate it off) in the room you spend the most time in (the kitchen, living room, etc.) and bring out her toys, food and water, and bed (if you dont have a doggy bed, you might want to get one) into the room. Set it up a few days b4 the surgery so she can get accostumed to it. Hope i was helpful!

Stuffing a kong or a hollow marrow bone with squeese cheese, peanut butter or just mushed up bread gives her hours of working the good stuff out rather than going cross eyed with bordom. TV & radio can help some too....

well you are trying to do the best you can now... i would just see if she feels like playing at times and then not worry about it.. as long as you are around her and keep her company at times she should be fine...it was nice though i thought to take her on a ride in the red wagon.. she may get use to it.. maybe at times she just wants to be left alone too...put some pet toys in there that she might like to play with and pass the time away...other than that i think you are doing the best you can...

Put a piece of your clothing in the playpen with her my dog loves to sleep on our clothes so we put a pair of partners ripped old trackpants in her bed so she is happy now and a pillow and a blanket her food and water and a chew bone.

sit in the pen with her peting her and calming her and then when she is on the brink of falling asleep or is really relaxed.......simply leave for a while and then come back later (about 2 or 3 hrs.) and do it again. hope it works!!!!! good luck candie queen

There are alot of toys that you can get to help keep her busy. Kong's are good, specially if you put some peanut butter in them and freeze it first. If she becomes very anxious and could hurt herself, you may want to discuss sedation with your vet.

Talk to her when you are in the house but in a different room.
