Because there is more money in the entertainment industry than in the public purse, imagine the outcry if your taxes were increased so that a police officer could earn pop star salaries

Your question is misleading.
Some entertainers make more money than, not just police, but doctors, and teachers, even the President of the United States. But of all the people who entertain the ones making that kind of money are a small, a very small percentage. Most entertainers make so little they have to have "day jobs".
I think your question should be why do we pay our police, teachers, doctors, etc. so-little. Not why do the Stones make so much money. They and their ilk have worked at what they do and they're reaping the rewards of their efforts.
Police, teachers, and doctors are necessary and we (citizens) should pay for them. But what we do is piss and moan about "the government" not doing "their job" (huh, hello! WE are the government!)
We need to hold our representatives accountable. People should participate. 30% voter turnout is pitiful. That means that 70% of Americans don't voice there concerns where it counts the most.
If you vote you let your representative know what you want. You want better paid police? Tell your representative, don't just jump on somebody's bandwagon, get your own!
uh, sorry I got a little carried away.
Anybody know who's playing at the Roxie this weekend?

Yes, it is basic economics. Law enforcement officers are (relatively) plentiful, whereas top tier entertainers are (relatively) scarce. Think of Tiger Woods. If there were 20 million people that could play like him, he wouldn't be gettin' no million dollar prizes! which one would I rather have safeguarding me and society? THE COP!!!

because the masses are *sses.
They care more about being entertained than they do about being free....which would explain a lot about the state of the government of the U.S. at this time.

...the same reason there is more money spent on the war than on education. The priorities of this country are all mixed up. It's quite sickening.

because our society is hedonistic in nature... we would rather pay more money for pleasure and for escape from our daily lives then pay for those that are essential to actually keeping us safe and allowing us the lives we enjoy
