It would be better for the child if she knew who the father was so the child could not only know its father but the father's medical history. She could ask all the potential fathers to take a paternity test. Shows like the Jerry Springer show will pay for the testing if she is willing to put herself out there.
If for some reason she doesn't want to know who the father is, she isn't required to. When she fills out the birth certificate information at the hospital, she can just put "unknown" for the father. This does happen sometimes.

Okay, I hope you're getting the guys to wrap it up... yes, it's vitally important that the mother of any child know who the father is. Hereditary (meaning passed down in your family) diseases and disorders are only the tip of the iceberg of things to think about. The biggest thing is that one day, that child is going to ask who its father is. And not knowing just because she's too damned lazy to figure it out is totally a bunch of crap, to put it mildly. Even if the child's father is a piece of trash, the child should know its heritage--slavery destroyed enough of our familys' trees even though it was officially outlawed almost 150 years ago!!. And your friend will possibly shut off an extra set of grandparents (that's half the baby gifts, the child getting only half as spoiled as it could be).

Here's the scoop. She does not have to know who the father is for any reason other than child support. And she can wait till the baby is born to find that out. Lots of people have babies and dont put a father on the birth registration, you just mark unknown. It's simple.

Legally a child can now survive without the tag of his fathers name. But emotionally a child has a right to know. The mother too will need to know. If not today maybe at a later stage-- trust me.

You don't have to know who the father is...it would be a good thing if you did for the child's sake. Most states don't make a law that you have to list the father on the birth certificate.

It's probably pretty good to have at least a vague idea... but you don't NEED to know.
There are all kinds of genetically inheritable 'issues' that could pop up, and if there were any concerns it might be handy to be able to go back to the biological father if some kind of test is required...

They're going to ask her who she thinks the father is if she tried to get any kind of public assistance, like welfare. It's good to know who the father is also for health considerations. But if she isn't going on welfare and doesn't want child support, she doesn't have to say anything.
