cats are naturally wild animals so when they are domesticated some of their behavior baffles people. Cats scratch things to sharpen their claws. If its a problem, get a scratching post or get front claws removed, but leave the back claws so your cat can still climb trees if chased. If you remove the claws, they will still go through with the motions (they don't know any better) but you won't have shredded walls. As for the wallpaper, they like to chew on things, keeps their breath minty fresh, helps keep their mouth and teeth clean, and keeps teeth sharp. Get your cat some toys to play with and your wallpaper should be left alone.

Maybe your cat needs a scratching post to play with and use for its claws. It might be bored. Try and keep your cat away from your walls and it won't scratch and rip your wallpaper. You have to let your cat know that its unacceptable and keep him/her away from the paper. Cats can be trained just like dogs can. Good Luck!

Cats need to sharpen their claws put them some kind of rope or a piece of wood near their place and they will beggin to scratch it.
This si some way of maintaining their healthy claws.
Eating wallpaper?..mmm.. maybe they are smelling some attractive smell.. or maybe they need some gras. try buying them aspecial little attractive smelling bone.
Cats can also develop pica. Pica is a condition where cats chew or eat unusual things such as fabric, plastic or wool. This behavior is mostly harmless as they do not digest most of it, but can be fatal or require surgical removal if a large amount of foreign material is ingested (for example, an entire sock). It tends to occur more often in Siamese, Burmese and breeds with these two in their ancestry.
Additionally, cats have been known to develop a fondness for "people food" such as chicken, bread, French fries, pizza, ice cream, tomato soup, carrot juice, olives, and carnitas burritos, as well as cat diet exotica such as corn kernels and diced cantaloupe. Many "people foods" are not good for cats; chocolate, for example, can be fatal due to the presence of theobromine (see theobromine poisoning), although few cats will eat chocolate.
Cats have a natural urge to scratch: the action helps them remove old material from their claws, and they mark territory with scent glands in their paws. Indoor cats may be prevented from exercising this urge on furniture if they are provided with an acceptable scratching post.
Well.. try give your cats some natural environment..maybe this will help.

I agree with some people above.. it's a natural thing. But DON"T DECLAW your cat!! If he/she is still very young, you can learn him/her to scratch a scratch pole, or have a bit of wall reserved for him/her. They need to scratch to sharpen their nails.
I would advice you not to declaw your cat, it's not natural and think of it like this, would you like to have to tops of your fingers removed?? If you remove, even if "only" frontpaw, the cat's claws, it will be defenceless when in a fight situation. Also, it can not do "presicion work" anymore. My cat likes to play with green beans, but she couldn't hold them if not for her claws.
To declaw a cat means that you make it handicapt. If you truly love your cat, you will learn to live with scratched wallpaper... I did. I see it this way.. we all have our "faults," my little sister never closes the garden gate, my other sister always takes my bike when I need it, my other sister forgets to call when she stays out late, my father mows the lawn too early on saturday morning, my mother always brings home the wrong fruit juice, I'm always late for class, the dog always eats the cat food, and the cat always scratches the walls... but we just need to learn to live with that!

Cats do scratch walls because they play with it and they eat wallpapers to make their teeth hard. You cat is normal and you have to be patient with it.

Do not worry beacause my cat does that. I think that i is just leaving it's mark. Really do not have textured wallpaper and buy the special products which you can get from vets and pet shops to put on the walls to stop them.

you really should ask your vet . it would certainly cut out all the guessing games for you. it only takes a phone call to ask for the right advice. You could also get a cat magazine that comes out every month called Your Cat, any newsagent can get it for you. it's full of information on all cat issues and many good websites. good luck in the future bye for now
