ya... you can... first, make sure both copys of the XP are the same versions. sp2 pirated and legit. if this is so, pop the XP legit cd in, and boot of it. when you get to the screen that talks about recovery consle, skip it. then the setup will scan your harddrive to look for a different copy of XP. when you get to this point hit R on that harddrive and it will reinstall a ligit copy of XP over the pireted one and have all your file intact.

Yes. It might be possible to just enter the Product Key but I'd recommend you use that new and legitimate install CD to do a system repair. Let it overwrite the pirated version just to make sure any missing or corrupt files are restored.

Two cautions: If you choose to do the repair, you do NOT want to use the Recovery Console option. You want to install. And the SECOND time you see the prompt to "hit any key to reboot from CD", don't. Just let the computer reboot on its own from the hard drive, not the CD. It may take a minute or two so be patient.

After you do the overwrite, you will have to reinstall your updates. The actual overwrite process takes about 45 minutes. Reinstalling the updates takes about 20 - 30 minutes.

Hope this helps.

I guess windows will not accept the new key since it's an upgrade.
However, I recommend that you backup all ur important files, format ur hard disk and run a fresh installation. This will save you trouble in the future, if u need to re-install windows. Otherwise, you'll always have to refer to the old key.

Yes you can, but it is always better to do a clean installation after formatting. You may face problems later if you load it on a pirated one.

I think you can just type in the product key of your genuine Windows XP and the activation should take care of itself.

Yes, you have to manually enter the genuine XP serial numbers yourself, to do this, go here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328874
