Yes! We yawn because our bodies need more oxygen. And when we see someone else yawn it tells our body it needs more oxygen. Yawning does not necessary mean you're tire. Even though this is associated with yawning. We could yawn because we are excited about something and we are trying to stay alert. Like when you're in a lecture hall listening to someone talking. People start to yawn. It's associated with being bored. But the fact is your body needs more oxygen to stay alert.

No, the nature of yawning is still pretty much unexplored scientifically. It is known that yawning itself is linked to raising the level of consumed oxygen in a way to stimulate the work of your organism. Yawning is often caused by a change in activity - like waking up or going to sleep. Nevertheless there's no scientific explanation for yawning being contagious.

Scientists still don't know for sure exactly we yawn, so why it is contagious is a far shot... There may be some theories you read online, but frankly, no one's too sure.

Yes, lack of oxygen forces you to yawn and take in more oxygen. When you do that there is less oxygen for the rest of the people in the room. They are forced to yawn to take in more oxygen as well.

I don't know how scientific this is, but the power of suggestion is pretty strong. I think that this is what is happening.
